I booked Ana Rapu Residencial around 8 months ago as part of the trip my husband and I planned for our honeymoon. By email everything seemed great, we booked a sea view cottage and got a cheaper price as goodwill for our honeymoon.
However, when we arrived, we were the only passengers on the plane who didn't get welcomed with flower garlands, instead we were met by a surly young man (apparently the owner's sister's boyfriend) who didn't help with our luggage, just walked off and expected us to follow. We immediately felt let down and like we had missed out on a proper Rapa Nui welcome.
When we arrived at the hotel we were shown to a small room with bare chipboard walls. This was not the seaview cottage we had booked so far in advance and when I threatened to leave, suddenly the right room became available.
The cottage was spacious and seemed clean and airy with views of the sea as promised. Things were not as they seemed though as the toilet did not flush unless you pulled the cord inside the cistern. We also had no hot water for 3 of the 6 days we stayed there and despite telling the owner 3 times she didn't seem to care and nothing was done. Worse than this was that the room was not cleaned once during our stay which is particularly bad when the sewage system doesn't take toilet paper and you have to use a bin instead. The whole place seemed run down and in need of some TLC.
Breakfast was simple but adequate and at first I was given an alternative breakfast when I explained I needed a gluten free diet. From day 3 though I was simply told in Spanish that there were no eggs left and I was forced to go without. From then I had to supply my own eggs. It was not possible to cook breakfast for myself in the communal kitchen because there were no pans and it was filthy.
Most disappointing was the complete absence of our host. On arrival she promised to help us with anything we needed and said she would be around most of the day to help. Whenever we looked for her, she was nowhere to be found but would always protest at breakfast the next morning that she had been there. We ended up organising all of our trips and activities ourselves at some of the excellent places in town as we couldn't afford to waste time waiting for our hotel owner to show up. The final straw was when she told us she had reconfirmed our flights back to Santiago including my special meal during the flight and I discovered on the flight that the crew had no record of my special meal and I had to go hungry.
The one good thing about the hotel was its location - close to the ocean, the dive centre and a short walk from the main street. Sadly though the development of a new luxury hotel interrupts the view of sunset in the evening.
If we ever return to Easter Island, we would certainly pay more to stay in a hotel which was clean and made us feel welcome, neither of which we got from Ana Rapu Guest House.
