The Argyll is a classic example of an old, tired hotel. True, it has a nice view over the bay (assuming you're in a front-facing room - otherwise the car park is your vista), and is less than a minute's walk to the ferry terminal, but honestly the good points pretty much stop there. For what it is, it's an expensive stay - rooms should be more around the £60 price point rather than £100. I notice in other posts that refurbishment is mentioned, but there were no obvious signs of it during our stay.
The staff are welcoming and helpful, but that can't disguise the fact that the hotel is in serious need of attention. The staircase to the upper floor is narrow, pungent, and has a rather dodge door that opens out onto the top step - I nearly fell down it myself at one point. All the communal areas are pretty ropey, looking more like a hostel than a hotel. The room itself wasn't too bad, with a comfortable bed, a writing desk and good storage, but the bathroom was the sort of thing you'd expect in an old house. Carpet on the floor that smelled vaguely of urine and walls with peeling paper - not nice.
The hotel has a varied menu, but prices are high. £15 for a basic risotto? No thanks. Breakfast is nothing special, and service isn't speedy.
In the evenings the bar area does get crowded, although the noise was muted upstairs. The staircase does act as a bit of a chimney for the kitchen - I was rocked back by the stench of onions cooking when I went downstairs, again adding to the hostel-feel of the place.
In short, the Argyll is okay for a single night if you can't book into anywhere else, but it has too many grubby areas that let it down, and lacklustre food, to warrant the price. You'd do better to try one of the local B&Bs.
Room Tip: Rooms at the back have pretty terrible views
