“Nice place for a quiet relaxing break”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

We stayed overnight at The Urr Valley hotel and were a bit dubious after having read some of the reviews. O.K it's not The Ritz, but it was comfortable and quite charming in its own way. Yes it could do with a bit of a touch up in places but we had a very enjoyable stay. The staff couldn't have been nicer and we ate in the restaurant in the evening and enjoyed a lovely meal. Breakfast was excellent too. All in all an enjoyable, relaxing stay.

“Oh Dear - where do I start?”

We went for Sunday lunch with my Husband's Parents. I got a bit twitchy when there were only 2 cars on the car park at 12.30pm on a Sunday lunch time. Inside was a time warp back to the 70's, a threadbare time warp. The menu was as 70's as the decor. The quiche I had was edible but completely spoilt by serving it with vegetables and salad on a hot plate. The creme caramel served for pudding was at best a Green's packet affair. Afterwards we were invited to have coffee and shortbread in the 70's lounge. I sat on a velvet covered chair with large cigarette burns. The shortbread was inedible. The only asset this place has are the staff who are polite and helpful however they are 70's too so wont be around for too much longer. Don't bother eating at this hotel - it needs to be left to rest in peace.

“Friendly staff, great food and an atmosphere for kicking off your shoes.”

I can't believe that other guests have left negative experiences of this hotel. Quite simply, it's fabulous. I love the shabby chic, it hasn't had an interior designer near it to achieve this look - it's 100% natural. The food is incredible, good hearty portions with flair and finesse. The imaginitive chef deserves praise indeed. The rooms are clean and homely, think granny's spare bedroom with the wardrobe her aunty Maude left her and great uncle John's rug on the floor. The dovecote and the Victorian Walled garden are just fabulous and a chilled beer on the lawn whilst soaking up the sun to the sound of a Woodpecker is pure perfection. I will visit again - without a shadow of a doubt. I would like to add that I like this place because it reminds me of my childhood. My parents brought me up to appreciate beauty and the basics in life. If you were brought up to crave glitz and pretentiousness with sycophantic staff .... you'll detest the Urr Valley Hotel!

Venture @ your peril to the Urr Valley Hotel. The scruffy reception looked like a shed.Shown to a room with twin beds that looked like camp bed with army blankets. The room was dingy and scruffy, the so called en-suite was worse.Old suite with filthy plastic curtain. We left in a hurry and had a lucky escape. They should pay guests to stay there.

“Lovely location - but that's it all ends there......”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2009

I've stayed at the Urr Valley with two previous owners. It always needed improvements and investment but the overall experiences were good.
This time my room was particularily cold and damp. The room was NOT SERVICED satisfactorily (if at all) on the first day so I put this down to an oversight, but set up the room to check the following day. The bed was not made, dirty wine glass sat where it was placed and towels were left on the floor where I planted them. The toothbrush mug had previous occupant's water in it on arrival and stayed that way throughout. But, they had left more biscuits, which was the only clue to anyone having attended! My advice would be stay somewhere else. If committed DO NOT accept one of the 'gun rooms' as I've stayed in most of them and they're all cold and damp after summer but at least heating was on previously. Other rooms to the rear are significantly better, but still suffer infrastructure problems.
Fortunately I carry a fan heater in the car for such events and it warmed the room admirably i.e. self help as the staff were pleasant but not very effective.
On checkout the £70 / night asking price was immediately reduced to £46 so that suggested the room status was known. At £70 it would be a ripoff.
This was the worst of all visits and enough is enough. I will not return.
