“Lovely on the outside, shame about the inside”

The hotel is in a quiet location, set within lovely grounds and within a short distance of Castle Douglas town centre. We had two rooms, and both were very disappointing. The room we occupied had damp bedding, the mattress was in need of replacement, and it did not feel clean. Overall the decor and furniture in both rooms was looking tired. The second room we booked was supposed to be a double for single occupancy. The room we got was just a single.

When we were ready to eat at 6 p.m. we were advised that the chef would not be available for another hour. Luckily the town centre of Castle Douglas had an Italian Restaurant, which seemed popular with the locals. The price per room was certainly too high for the standard of the accommodation. When checking out of the hotel it was not surprising to us that we were never asked whether or not we enjoyed our stay at the hotel.

“Disgruntled, Aberdeen”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

Extremely shabby room tucked at the back/basement of hotel behind two fire doors down two corridors and two flights of steps, difficult to negotiate with luggage. Mattress so old worn and uncomfortable that two blankets were required to cover the springs poking up. Wallpaper peeling . No welcoming instruction book, no telephone or alarm clock, no milk at the tea making facility, no soap or shampoo in the en-suite, no bath mat or safety non-slip mat for shower cubicle, clean towels damp. In the dining room the food was good although our choice on the dinner menu was unavailable and the staff forgot to return with the pudding course by which time the kitchen was closed. No white bread for toast in the morning. Lounge bar advertised an extensive and impressive list of malt whiskies but only had only two kinds in stock. No management to complain to on checking out and premises understaffed
Brochure and website claiming 'Luxury in the Heart of Galloway' is a misrepresentation. Despite a letter to the Proprietor, he did not grace us with a personal reply. We would not visit this establishment again or recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Avoid Room 15

“Not what we expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

Only ever saw one member of staff who was reception when we arrived and taking our breakfast order and serving breakfast the following morning. Tired decor, rooms not particulalry clean, corridoors smelling bad, no one about. We would not go back.

“We had a great time!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

Room and bathroom were both spacious, bed very comfortable and clean. Food was excellent, home cooked and delicious, both dinner and breakfast (and a varied choice).
Staff very friendly and helpful.
Location quiet but within easy reach of any amenities you might need.
Yes it is a little tired in the decoration stakes but we understand that the new owner is going to address this very soon.

“In need of updating and sorting of leaking ceilings!!!!”

Booked with Late rooms at a cheap rate of £40.00 per single room per night.
Receptionist was stood outside having a smoke on arrival with what looked like a workman, but turned out to be the chef!
Shown to my room, with the green shower and sink, and well used toilet seat!
The bed was comfy and beding clean and soft.
The resturant in the evening was open but due to the lack of atsomphere chose to eat out. The chef didnt turn up for breakfast, however they seemed to manage as my break was okay!
I did get a bit wet on the way down to breakfast with leaking celings in a few areas dripping.
The hotel is in a lovely setting a mile outside Castle Douglas, but it is in serious need of some money spending on it. It is in a very poor state. - Great shame!
