“ok ,but only a glorified b&b”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2011

first the good points, it's situated in the main street, with a rear car park and the hotel downstairs is ok, its when you go upstairs to the rooms that it dissapoints. The rooms are ok, but dated, my tv' and set top box plugs were hanging in mid air from a mutli socket from the floor, the sash window, was old ,badly in need of relacing with mould around the edges, the bathroom was large and the shower water was piping hot , but again an old carpet needed to be replaced and the bath tiles needed replacing or re-grouting, but 6 towels and proper soap and shower gels, thanks!. the breakfast was ok but again a tired looking dining room .It needs a refurb upstairs, it's a shame beacuse it could be a great little hotel.Dont bank on the free wi-fi service they advertise , I couldn't find a signal

“Lovely hotel full of character”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2010

This hotel which was a previous Coach Inn is full of character.
Rooms are spacious and clean and the staff are friendly.
Wonderful full english breakfast in the morning, if you are fresh enough to get up early.
The hotel bar next door really takes off some evenings with live music and fun.
Especially at the weekends when locals come from all around meeting in this bar.

“great stay!”

Recently travelled through Castle Douglas on our way to the ferry in Stranraer when we felt we should stop over. The Imperial Hotel had vacancies and with such a warm welcome we could not refuse. We were greeted by an Irish man and from there on in we felt it was home from home. We dined at the hotel and had a few night caps, it was as if we had our very own maître d . We had a great night it was a fantastic start to our family holiday and we will definately stay in the Imperial again if only to find out the Irish mans name.

“Very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2008

The Imperial Hotel was very disappointing. Our rather small room was decorated c. 1980 and the shower was of the same vintage - and despite the fact that smoking in hotel rooms has been banned for a few years, it still had a slight smell of stale smoke. The welcome was friendly enough and when we asked for breakfast at 7 am we were assured that a continental breakfast would be left out for us - but we went along at 7 am and no breakfast. As I was about to spend the day doing a mountain bike race this was a dreadful start to the day. I can recommend that a good breakfast is to be had at the Old School Tearoom a few miles along the A75 towards Stranraer - but I cannot recommend the Imperial Hotel. The charge of £39 ppn puts it in a bracket with many hotels of a significantly better standard, and it seriously fails to match up.
