I've stayed at many hotels around the world but this was a different and better experience and at a price that is more than reasonable.

The mansion is an 19th century building full of character and set in huge wonderful grounds that you can explore as you wish. It's on the outskirts of Castle Douglas but the town centre is only a short walk away.

The b&b part of the house is distinct from the rest of the mansion yet service was always prompt and friendly. As we arrived we were offered a drink and taken to our rooms and when we asked about an evening meal we were directed to a nearby restaurant that provided a delicious meal.

It almost feels like staying in a stately home and the bedroom felt more homely & relaxing than those of of the typical budget hotel though it has all the usual amenities. It felt very private and was very quiet which meant a good night's sleep.

Breakfast time was largely left to us to decide and the full Scottish breakfast was excellent. Later in the day when we returned from a trip out we were once again offered a drink (even though we had tea making facilities in our room) as we relaxed in the large lounge which doubles as the breakfast room.

all in all a terrific experience and one I'd happily recommend.
