“Little Scottish Treasure!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Having stayed here many times over a period of 9 years, I am happy to say it just keeps getting better! Everything about this place is traditionally Scottish, from the tartan decked rooms to excellent quality the food.

We stayed in Room 2 this time - overlooking the main street. Despite this we had no disturbance from the street or from the rest of the hotel. The bathroom is huge and could easily sleep 3 itselt! The only problem I had with my entire stay was the poor shower but considering the village the hotel is situated in, we were not expecting modern power showers!

The hotel looks out on to spectacular Galloway scenery second to none and is literally on the doorstep of the Galloway Forest. A must for all walkers - or tourists!

The food is simply incredible. The evening menu has a good range of choices and all at very reasonable prices. The breakfast is out of this world. If you are not an early riser (like myself) please do set your alarm clock because the breakfast is not to be missed. They even do an extensive range for vegetarians and children. Everyone is accomodated for. With everything locally and seasonally sourced you are guaranteed a true Scottish feast. It is safe to say we have all returned from our trip several pounds heavier!

The feature that this hotel should be most proud of has to be the incredible staff. From the manager Callum, to the amazingly friendly barman-come-babysitter David or "Cooth" as he is locally known, this hotel is home to the most professional and efficient staff you will find in this part of the world. The catering staff are perfect examples of how catering staff should be - helpful, efficient and barely noticeable!! There was no long wait between courses, no wrong orders, no mistakes at all and considering this stay was over New Years Eve when the hotel was packed to the rafters we were all amazed at the service from the entire team. Nothing is ever too much hassle for the staff at the Bruce including changing the menu for some very fussy eaters, creating a cocktail list for some very fussy drinkers to creating a children's quiz for some very restless children!

This hotel is the perfect place for your family getaway. It sadly felt like we were leaving our own home upon departure!

Room Tip: All rooms are good. Rooms with the view of the Galloway hills are even better!

“shocking accommodation”

We asked for a quiet room with the hotel being on a main road. It was room 12 the last bedroom at the end of the roof space at the back of the building. We couldn't get into the room initially, fearful of pulling off the rickety handle off. the very friendly assistant told us there was 'a knack' to opening the door and obliged with a tug on the door and a turn of the key. Inside the the decor was dreadful, paper peeling from the ceiling, poor furnishings, insufficient bedding, which barely covered the top of the bed and for the temperature of the room. (October and no heating). The bathroom was desperate for a refurb, it was very Heath Robinson! The door wouldn't close properly the poor quality shower went from hot to cold without warning, the shower curtain was hanging off, the bathroom was damp due to there being no fan for ventilation. The towels were so small, thin and old I wouldn't use them to dry my dog. This is a very tired and tatty looking hotel once inside the rooms, quite the worst I have stayed in for a very long time. At breakfast we were offered a 'full breakfast', sausage, bacon, black pudding, haggis egg, tomato, mushroom and beans, lovely! I asked for no meat so ended up with 1 poached egg, 1 mushroom cut in 4 and half a tomato, all beautifully cooked but lost on the dinner plate it was served on. The waiter commented that it didn't look much! No kidding, perhaps another mushroom and the other half of the tomoato to keep it company might have filled it out a bit! Very poor provision for anyone who has any dietary needs. Oh and do change the music in the breakfast room. A very dissapointing stay from what we had anticipated from the website and other reviews.

“A good place to stay.”

This is a farily standard place made good by the staff. Politely greeted and well served thoughout my stay despite the the place being really busy. And although the room wasn't the type I'd booked, and it smelled like a jock strap when I walked into the gloom of low-energy bulbs, it was spacious with a good shower (but I heard another resident compaining at breakfast so I might have stolen her pressure!).

The food is good pub fare. Far from gormet, but so are the prices: fair do's.

Room Tip: Not room 18 which is above the kitchen.

“Comfortable, quiet, traditional hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011

This is a nice hotel in a lovely part of Scotland and a handy stop over for the Northern Ireland ferries. We had a spacious very reasonably priced room. The breakfast was good although the pop music radio in the restaurant did spoil the traditional Scottish character of the hotel.
