“Beware the extractor fan!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2011

First impressions were good. We were greeted warmly and showed immediately to our room by a very pleasant young lady.
That's where the problems began.
Our guide showed us the room (Room 2) then advised us not to worry about the noise as it was 'just the extractor from the kitchen, and would be shut off when the kitchen closed'. The sound of the extractor was loud, and as we had travelled a long way that day and wished to have a short nap before dinner it was very intrusive.
The room itself was very basic, the only mirror in the room a very small one on top of the dressing table. The bathroom was very dark and the tiny mirror was too high for all but the tallest to use.
My husband went to ask if there was an alternative room which was quieter and was shown the other two rooms available (the fourth was occupied). Room 3 was as noisy as Room 2, suffering the same problem with the kitchen extractor fan. Room 1 was above the bar and you could clearly hear the conversations from the bar before the door to the room was even opened.
When we made it clear that we were not prepared to stay in any of the rooms we were given the chance to look at the cottage. This is a pleasant cottage, with a double and two single bedrooms. It is adjacent to the pub and, most importantly peaceful and quiet. We agreed to stay here for the night, but whilst the bed was comfy, the furnishings were again very basic and the whole place was grubby and a little uncared for. The kitchen was minimally equipped - four plates, four bowls, four knives etc.
We had booked a table in the pub for dinner, and were anticipating a good meal - not the case. Clearly the Compasses equate lots of food with good quality. My goats cheese in filo pastry starter was enough for a main meal, but the parcels had been deep fried and very very greasy. The pork belly main course can only be described as disappointing and I would describe the whole dining experience as basic at best.
Breakfast the following morning was the best meal; the cooked breakfast was well cooked, but again the idea of more is lots more seemed to hold fast. When I asked for tea I was asked if I wanted 'Builders tea'!! The full english was described as two of everything- and when I asked for just one of everything I was told I wanted a half full breakfast.
If I had to describe the place succinctly I would say it was lacking in finesse and attention to detail and was riding upon its awards. We found the place in Alastair Sawdeys Special Places to Stay. Special it was not, and it didn't match the description in this guide one bit.

“Quiet, comfortable, unique with A+ food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2010

We have stayed twice at the Compasses ... each time arriving in the early darkness of an English autumn afternoon. To drive down the narrow road off the A303 (?) is to leave it all behind. It is dark! The hotel is dark - closed till 6. A thumbtacked note advises you of the room and key arrangements. It's all ready for your arrival. The rooms are clean, comfortable and splendidly quiet. The pub opens at six, the meals below are worthy of Wiltshire dining pub of the year. Alan - the owner/manager presides genially at breakfast and will answer all questions - especially on 70's Brit-rock. Take his advice on Stonehenge. Drive by and have a look. No need to pay the tariff.

“The bestest hoetl in the world I have ever stayed in.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2010

I stayed here a while ago (a bit before the date allowable in the review template) and have such fond memories I had to write a review. We stayed in Plum Cottage 2 adults and 3 young kids. The staff were wonderful and made our stay. The location was amazing; we had lovely walks in beautiful countryside and founds plenty to do with the kids within 30-45 minutes drive; New Forest, Bournemouth, woodland adventure parks and Stonehenge.

This is the best UK holiday I have had.

Thank you compass inn.

“Basic but romantic accommodation in historic surrounding”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2010

This is a historic 14th century pub and inn, with only few rooms, in the middle of the romantic English countryside.
We stayed in the adjacent Plum cottage, which is a neat&clean full apartment, with kitchen, living room with fireplace, and 3 bedrooms (one large, 2 tiny w/o any furniture beside the bed)
As the place is far from the main road you can have a very quiet sleep, but it may be hard to find, especially at night!
Dining in the pub was also good.
The only problem is: if you have to leave before 9am, you have to leave without breakfast, as the first staff to open the pub only comes at 9am in the morning

“Lovely Country Pub experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2010

We loved our stay in the Plum Cottage adjacent to the Pub. This is a quaint, old cottage just like the main pub. Inside is very comfortable and cozy - nice kitchen, comfortable living/dining room with a wood stove, and 3 small bedrooms upstairs with good beds. This was perfect for our family of 4. The pub is lively at night with lovely people from the area - you really feel like you have escaped into the English countryside. Pub patrons hang out just outside your door in good weather enjoying quiet conversation, and it was always quiet by 10:00 PM, so we enjoyed being part of the place. Location is only about 20 minutes from Salisbury, but plan on eating dinner at the inn. Once you drive down the tiny country road at the end of the day, you won't want to go out again. However, there is another village close by if you want other pub options. Alan and his staff were welcoming and helpful, without going overboard.
