We stayed here on July 12, 2011. Lacock Village is the definition of history and charm rolled into one. Add the Harry Potter film scenes for the fans in your family and this village will be on your list of really easy places to visit in England. (I must add that the cottage is not set up for young children though). The town is really small (an afternoon is more than enough time), and rather than stay in one of the hotels I opted for this cottage a mile out, although it feels like forever away because it is so firmly in farm country. There is just nothing like being able to stay in a thatched roof cottage, but our host, Nancy Robertson, takes a generally appealing idea and turns it into a great stay for her guests. You have a completely distinct two story structure to yourself with its own entrance. The décor is perfect; after leaving the HP sites in Lacock I felt like we were staying in the Shire (well I guess technically we were). Breakfast was excellent in Nancy’s kitchen, which looks like it could be in architectural digest for its English countryside design. In the winter Nancy offers an evening meal which she also did for us as a favor (it was my birthday). It was likewise excellent. The back yard garden is lovely. I sat out and read while my teenager kicked a soccer ball. The cottage is well maintained and clean. The bed (a queen bed by American standards, although the website says it is a double) is very comfortable. The shower has plenty of hot water and good water pressure. Altogether a great place to stay.
