“Fascinating house, comfy beds and friendly dogs.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Arranged to meet some friends here on our travels and were really impressed with this grand old family house. The beds were so comfy, we slept in and neary missed breakfast!
Our vegetarian friend was pleased with the breakfast selection and I loved the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon!
We were missing our own Jack Russell, so it was a delight to meet Ruby and her mate Missy. There is loads to do near Lacock - a fascinating historic village with Lacock Abbey -which the BBC were using as a film setting and the excellent Photographic Museum. We drove rather than walked into the village as there were few street lights at night and it was just a little too far after a meal. We also saw and 'touched' Avebury stone circle - Magic!

Room Tip: We stayed in Abbotts room on the ground floor which had a modern bathroom suite.

“Nice old house”

The proprietor, Elaine, was nowhere near as unfriendly or unwelooming as has been reported elsewhere on this site, quite the opposite, in fact, but I have to agree that the B&B business appears "secondary" to her other interests; this illustrated by, for example, rather "tired" looking breakfast cereals in plastic bowls, juice not being replenished, so-so decor / facilities in rooms, some "skimping" here and there...
However, everything is perfectly adequate, so if you are not fussed about 5- star decor / facilities for your not cheap price, but want to stay in a grand old interesting building, right next to a facinating old village (Lacock) you will not be disappointed. Enjoyed our 2 night stay here and would stay again for that purpose.

Room Tip: We stayed in the "Vestry" room on the ground floor, no problems, quiet.

“Perfect B&B in a historic village”

This was our second stay at The Old Rectory and we loved it again. Elaine is a very genuine and welcoming host. Although it was our second stay we have stayed in three different rooms - the Vestry room, the Bishop room, and the Dean's room. All three rooms have very comfortable beds with full bathroom. Full breakfast with lots of choices. The Old Rectory is a lovely old building which fits in wonderfully with the historic village of Lacock.

It's just a 2-minute walk to the centre of the village of Lacock where the George Inn pub is a must to visit. The other pubs shouldn't be miss either. And don't miss visiting the Abbey (especially for the Harry Potter fans).

We really enjoy staying at The Old Rectory with the hospitality of Elaine and her family. We would definitely stay here again.

“Comfortable room, great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

We were down in Wiltshire celebrating a school friends 50th birthday dinner. We choose The Old Rectory for its proximity to the event but were really pleased with our choice. The room was comfortable and the breakfast was good. There was a nice atmosphere and it was a good price. We spent Sunday pottering around the village, which is unbelievable beautiful, before we set off back to London. We really enjoyed out stay.

“Lovely hotel, great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

We spent one night here, on a voucher we'd been given. A lovely hotel, not overly modernised as elderly country houses sometimes are, but genuinely old and beautiful. We enjoyed our stay immensely, particularly the views from our bedroom over the gardens, the short walk into the lovely village, and the delicious and plentiful breakfast. A couple of the pubs in the village give you discounts if you say you're staying here, which is a great touch.

The only thing I hadn't realised was that our bathroom wasn't en-suite (although it was dedicated to us, it was over the corridor). This wasn't a problem, and it was clean and warm, but if this is important to you, I suggest making sure you ask for one of the en-suite rooms.

I haven't rated 'value' as we travelled with a voucher, but I did look at the prices online and would say it's good value for the location and beauty (and breakfast!!!)

Room Tip: If it's important to you, ask for an en-suite room.
