“Impecable place to stay”

I came home to Gairloch because my Dad had recently passed away and my Mum was in hospital, to say it was a difficult time for me is an understatement. However the wonderful Shirley met me at the door and gave me a a very warm welcome, this was the start of Iain and Shirley's kindness and total consideration. I myself had arrived at very short notice and in due course my partner, my son, my sister and her son converged on Wayside. This wonderful couple did'nt turn a hair, nothing was too much trouble everybody was looked after with such attention to detail it was fantastic.
Wayside is an intimate Guest House as clean as a new pin with very careful attention to detail, and with the little things that make you feel cared for (yes Shirley I did appreciate the chocolates left on the stairs for the guests). Every room has tea, coffee and hot chocolate making facilities, there are colour T.V.s with built in DVD, and Shirley and Iain provide DVDs at no cost to the guest in a little box on the landing, Gairloch is sometimes rather hard on those of us with mobiles etc as the network coverage here is not great. Not a problem a Wayside network provision for laptops is laid on thanks to Shirley and Iain (do you see a pattern arising here? nothing is too much trouble!) The rooms are warm and comfortable, and thanks to Iain Breakfast is super with eggs fresh from hens in the village, and coffee that will lift your spirits all morning. In short anyone visiting Gairloch and not staying at, or attempting to stay at Wayside is missing out on a really good experience, and will never have the chance to meet a truly lovely couple. Iain, Shirley my sincere thanks you made a very stressful and difficult time so much easier to bear, and the little gifts were so very kind Shirley.

Arrived late afternoon after driving too many miles in too shorter time. Recieved a very warm and friendly welcome and was shown to a very clean and comfortable room. Was offered a varied choice of breakfast and qiuckly ticked all the boxes for the morning.
The breakfast was spot on and Shirley and Ian will obviously do everything they can to make your stay a welcome one. The hospitality was second to none. I would most certainly stay here again. Furthermore, the people of Gairloch will always be worth another visit, together with the beautiful surroundings.

“Honest-To-Goodness Scottish hospitality with a touch of home”

Arrived at Gairloch after dark having made no advance accommodation arrangements. Followed the main road through the village proper picking out a few BnBs as I went along and the Wayside Guest House was the one that appealed most: a quaint double-storey (what we refer to here in Grahamstown, South Africa) "Settler-style" house, that reminded me of home. I introduced myself by name and my country of origin to which the man who opened the door (Iain Smith as I learned), responded "from South Africa? Well, let me introduce you to another South African." It was his wife, Shirley, who left SA with Ian a good many years ago but still has her unmistakeable SA accent (unmistakeable, that is, to everyone who can't tell it apart from an Australian or New Zealand accent - SA is usually the 3rd choice). I was duly booked in and shown to my very nice room upstairs. The house looks directly across the street and a convenient parking area opposite onto Loch Gairloch, one of the finest you could wish to see and of which I had a perfect view from my bedroom window as I discovered the next morning. My schedule only allowed me the one night at the Wayside Guest House, but by the time I took my leave the next morning, Shirley, Iain and their son, Andrew, felt like friends. Shirley produces a wonderful breakfast, as I experienced in all the different BnBs I stayed in in Scotland, and even packed me a bit of "padkos" with what I couldn't finish. I also took away with me a drawing of a kilted Scot produced by Andrew as a keepsake of my stay. My bedroom didn't have an en suite but that didn't bother me in the least as the shared bathroom was right alongside. Iain & Shirley also run the local post office which is right next door - so when you arrive at Gairloch ask for the Post Office and you'll find the Wayside Guest House. It's also conveniently situated to the local Millcross hotel and restaurant/pub where I had the pleasure of meeting some friendly locals. Thanks Shirley, Iain & Andrew for a really enjoyable stay. I'd come back any day.
