“Fascinating step back in time.”

Shieldaig Lodge is a former hunting lodge probably built in the late 1800s which has been converted to a hotel. The setting is beautiful, the rooms are large and airy, the beds comfortable and the bathrooms modern and spotless. Both our dinner and our breakfast were excellent. Both the building and the grounds are showing their age however. The upholstery is worn, the paint and wallpapers are worn and the whole place feels like your grandparents' summer home when they could no longer quite manage the upkeep. But the staff are friendly and ambiance is so unique that we enjoyed our stay.

“Nice view. Shame about the room!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2011

Needs 'The Hotel Inspector' to pay a visit! Beautiful view from the room, though.

“A special place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2011

Having just returned from an idyllic week away I am looking at the last two reviews feeling like I live on a different planet. Shieldaig lodge doesn't pretent to be a five star hotel, But it is one of the last highland lodges that hasn't been turned into a boutique hotel with tartan carpets and a price tag designed to attract foreign tourists, It is set in one of the most scenic locations in the highlands, We watched seals and porpoises playing in the secluded bay while dining. Beat that!, The food is excellent and the welcome warm and personal i,e, Wendy and Gino are actually interested in getting to know you which is why this hotel more than survives on repeat business, If you want to experience living in this special location this is the place, If you want to pretentd you have been to scotland but are not really interested in the people or going outside then maybe I agree there are places that suit better, However as a lover of this amazing corner of the globe, like most visitors I will be going back,.

“West coast charm at its best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2011

Having travelled round most of Scotland over the years, found this hotel about 14 years ago and have been back twice a year ever since for holidays for up to 10 days at a time. The homely surroundings, excellent food and comfortable rooms, especially those which overlook the sheltered sea going loch, make for a relaxing place to be. Two cosy lounges and the dining room also have views straight onto the loch. There is also a nicely stocked bar and wine cellar. This is a family run establishment with none of the trappings of modern commercialism. Gino the owner has lived in the area for many years and his knowledge comes in handy for first time visitors to the area, especially for ‘hunting, shooting and fishing’ questions. All in all, with the surrounding hills, water and trees, this is a great place stay.

“DIDNT EVEN STAY”

Hadn't seen Juicylucy review until we returned .We also had a very similar experience and clearly her comment/complaints did not appear to have altered things in the couple of weeks in between We also had booked a superior room. The room was dusty and musty , Bed linen of some age and doubtful quality. There's no need to modernise just a good clean and tidy and better quality fittings etc to match location . A first for us in walking away from a hotel !!!
However excelent meal in Na Mara in Gairloch Village

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else
