We arrived at the Schooner on the 30th of December. We were greeted and checked in very quickly. We were shown to our room, which was at the very top of the hotel. I asked about parking and was told that at that time only on street parking was available. I explained that my car was on double yellow lines and one of the staff, Matt very kindly offered to move his car, which was parked outside the hotel thus giving me a space. Our room was tastefully decorated with a lovely oak framed King Sized bed with fresh clean linen and fluffy towels. A 40 inch flat screen tv on a chimney breast. The only disappointment was the open fire was no longer functional. (health and safety I assume.) As we had travelled some distance we decided not to venture out, but to try the Indian restaurant. We ordered pipadoms to start which arrived fairly promptly but, unfortunately were soggy. I spoke to the waiter who apologised and whisked them away and returned with a fresh plate of crispy popadoms. Despite this we had one of the best curries we have ever tasted and at a very reasonable price.
On New Years Eve we ventured out and had a walk round the idyllic Village and returned to the Schooner for a few drinks in the bar. The staff were friendly, courteous and attentive. In the evening we had a light meal, which was delicious and settled in for an Evening of entertainment with live music. The singer got of to a slow start to be honest but the bar soon filled up and he gave a great show with good mix of eclectic tracks. Just before midnight the owner, Mike, rounded all the guests up and armed with bottles of champagne we were lead up to the local church to see 2012 in. A Great Night was had by all! The next day I was surprised to find the hotel bar open. After a relaxing morning we decided to top up the alcohol from the previous night. I got talking to Mike about the hotel and the haunted element. He told us about the history of the hotel and about the most haunted rooms, 28, 29 and 30. All in all we had a fantastic stay in a 17th Century coaching inn. If you're looking for a modern chain type boutique hotel the Schooner may not be for you. But if its a hotel steeped in history with friendly staff in a beautiful corner of the Country you will love this place.
