My girlfriend and I spent a few weeks in England in December 2011, first at a hotel in London, then at a conference near Coventry, and finally 3 nights at the Yew Tree Cottage in the Cotswolds on our drive back to London, and this was the highlight of the whole trip!
Why? Well, the B&B is situated in the beautiful, green Cotswolds in the tiny village of Turkdean, right across from its grey stone church, and our upstairs "Beams Room" was very cozy and comfortable, but the main reason it was so great was the proprietor, Vivien Burford.
Vivien lives upstairs in the house, and you'll have to cross by her room to get to the bathroom associated with the "Beams Room", but you'll instantly feel at home when you walk in the door. Vivien has excellent suggestions for where to eat and where to visit, and her cooked breakfast is simply amazing: cereals, granola, fruit, home-made preserves, coffee, juice, eggs, porridge - whatever you want. She also does a home-cooked dinner with advance notice, and we had a stunning roast lamb with fresh mint sauce one night, with not one but two home-baked desserts. We enjoyed talking to her in the lounge downstairs and would certainly return when we next visit the Cotswolds.
If you like hiking, take your boots and start walking straight out the front door to join the Gloucestshire Way footpath. Nearby Northleach has two good restaurants, The Wheatsheaf for dinner and The Ox House Wine Bar for lunch, and there are plenty of others a further drive away. The Yew Tree is a great choice for a break in the English countryside.
