Bob and Mariko couldn't have been more welcoming, even though I announced myself by knocking over and breaking a bowl containing postcards in the bookshop with my clumpy suitcase. I didn't actually buy any books while I was here (instead I sold one to Bob), but if you love browsing this is the place for you - there are books lterally everywhere, not just in the bookshop downstairs but wherever bookshelves can be crammed into wall space.
I had the bedroom at the front on the second floor overlooking the sea, with its bathroom on the floor below, and it was very comfortable and well equipped. On the first floor are a sitting room/breakfast room for the use of the guests plus a kitchen which can be used for self-catering if required. There is also a single garage about ten minutes' walk away which can be booked. I had it for two of my three nights there, which was convenient as parking in Lyme is expensive and not always easy.
The place could not be more central to the beach, shops, restaurants and everything one might want to do in Lyme. Mariko's breakfasts are excellent, and the whole place is both comfortable and quirky. This is not the place for you if you like sculpted modernity or plumped-cushion, deep pile comfort. But for anyone appreciating a warm friendly welcome, an element of eccentricity and a homely atmosphere, this is perfect. And it is amazingly good value for money.
