“Expensive for what it is”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

We chose the Bay because it's one of the few hotels / B&Bs in and around Lyme that doesn't require a two night stay. It's location, right on the sea-front, it a draw too. On the downside though, it is expensive for what it is. The price on their website is per person, not per room. I booked thinking it was reasonably priced but later realised it was actually edging into the 5* price range. Unfortunately, the hotel isn't 5*.

It's Ok. We had a suite, tiny kitchen, little lounge, reasonably sized bedroom and a small bedroom. Nice and clean, but we could hear the people in the room above us moving around. Parking is a bit of a faff, but then space is premium in Lyme.

Breakfast wasn't spectacular. My husband had a bacon sandwich, for which they'd used unsmoked bacon and not taken the rind off. We would have liked more coffee, but it seemed one cup was all we were allowed. Toast was served but we had to ask for butter, as did other people in the restaurant. Sitting on the sea-front behind picture windows did make it better though.

We are sorry to hear that you stay was not up to standard. The breakfast and service is usually of a high standard but it appears to have been an unusual day, unlimited coffee and butter is normally readily available. You are correct to say that parking is of a premium in Lyme Regis and our separate secure parking works quite well. Our charges are generally in line with equivilent accomodation in the area and location but please look out for our special offers as we would like to welcome you back.

“Fast food for tourists - The Bay Bistro”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

Having seen a big advety about the new chef and seen a selection of dishes on offer on their website we thought we'd give it a go as we had an elderly parent in tow, have a nice Sunday lunch and we could sit and look at the sea. However when we were given the menu it was more like a cafe menu with a limited selection of cooked lunches - 2 roasts and a fish pie were the specials - whereas on the website there was a long list of them. My son and I had Fish & Chips - absolutely vile - the fish was not fresh, had a nasty coating on it and were I ever to venture into such a place as Iceland this would be what I would expect to buy. The chips were also not proper chips - tasteless and soft. Considering we were right on the seafront - prime location in Lyme - I would expect to have FRESH fish - not some ready done frozen offering which reqiures minimum preparation and cooking. We are very local and eat out frequently - why on earth would we return or recommend your restaurant? My husband had the roast - again the word tasteless was mentioned - frozen yorkshires - put loads of seasoning on the meat to improve the lack of flavour. We didn't mention any of this in the restaurant as this was a treat from my mother and we didn't want to spoil things for her. Let's hope the tourists keep you afloat as the locals will soon have you sussed out.

We find it difficult to understand why you did not bring such a bad experience to our attention on the day or even pop in after, as you are local. We have friendly and helpful staff and you could have taken any one of them to one side to explain your complaint. We accept that we do change our menu from daytime and evenings and from week to week but this is done purposely in order to maintain variety for our many regular customers. We would like to point out to you and our readers that, as advertised, our Chef uses fresh produce, prepared and cooked to order. We have a lot of very positive feedback about our food and listen to all comments, including yours, very carefully in order to help us to make progress.
While we understand you may not have enjoyed our food, we cannot accept accusations of using substandard products and undermining our reputation with the public.

“Wonderful Spot”

Booked sea view suite which also had separate lounge and small kitchen area with view over bay as well as the bedroom. Very expensive though, but the location could hardly be better.
Parking in a smallish garage five minute walk away. Good full breakfast.
Very much enjoyed and likely to return.

“Not really a hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

Stayed at the Bay and was disappointed. One strip of fancy pants wallpaper and matching curtains doesn't make a boutique hotel. It is in fact a series of apartments and a room downstairs that given it's size of a large sitting room sells itself as a Bar, Bistro and Restaurant, quite an amazing feet that it doesn't fulfil. 'Reception' is a piece of MDF in a corner of the what we will describe as the Bistro, although trying to get a drink after 9.30pm was impossible as everyone had gone home.
Nothing in the room led me to believe we were in a hotel, clean enough, although tiles in the bathroom needed a scrub and the half used body lotion bottle didn't really say 'boutique' although the price most certainly did.
Trying to be something it isn't but charging for the privilege of mis placed grandeur.
Will be staying next time at a local B&B

We do not advertise ourselves as a boutique hotel but we are a small hotel sleeping 28 guests in various ensuite bedrooms, or one and two bedroom suites with kitchenettes. Our Bistro currently seats 38 people which we find adequate for breakfasts, lunch, snacks and dinner. You stayed in a suite with a bedroom and lounge measuring approx 12 square metre each and newly furnished with a king size bed, oak units and leather sofa. The kitchenette is fully equipped with fridge, toaster, kettle, microwave and supplies of tea/coffee and biscuits. All of these rooms have uninterupted views over the bay and are free from car traffic noise. We can only apologise for the sub standard products left in the room, these are normally changed daily or added to on request. Our charges are in line with equivalent accommodation in the region and location. We do hope to see you again.

“Good location but pricey.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

Service and food in the resturaunt was excellent. The location on the sea front was good although parking and unpacking was a little tricky as the lock up garage was a few streets away. Breakfast was very good and the staff were friendly. The room itself was incredibly expensive considering it was the end of October but it was half term. We had a garden view room (um...view of a huge extraction pipe, garden view description is pushing it a bit!). We didn't mind the small room but it had far too much useless furniture in it (large dining table AND a large coffee table in a tiny space). If priced more reasonably I would stay again but not at the current price.
