“400 Year Old Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

My Husband and Myself decided to travel from Guernsey to Weymouth on the Ferry to have a long weekend in Dorset, He decided he would like to go to Lyme Regis as he had visited it over 35 years ago and he just wanted to go back and see if it had changed much. It took us 52 minutes as per the AA Planner and we arrived in Lyme Regis and parked the car in a two hour space whilst we went to have a look for somewhere to stay that night. We walked up the high street and saw the Royal Lion Hotel which I had read reviews on trip advisor so I knew that this Hotel would be a good one to stay at. We popped in to ask if they had availlabity and luckily for us there was one family room left so booked it at £110.00 for bed and breakfast. The reception staff were very nice and friendly and the manager showed us to our room which was in the 400 year part of the Hotel. It was a lovely spacious room with tea/coffee facilities ensuite shower room and everything that you would expect in a Hotel. There was a murder mystery going on that night so the Hotel was fully booked along with the restaurant so we decided just to have something to eat in the Bar. All in all I would recommend this hotel as it was full of Character and Charm, lovely staff and lovely food all in all a lovely weekend Break

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent visit to The Royal Lion Hotel. I was most concerned to learn how disappointed you were with your experience.

Firstly let me immediately apologise, it is clear that on this occasion we neither met your expectations nor the high standards of hospitality we set ourselves at The Royal Lion Hotel. I am afraid that the function was the first of its type for quite some time, and was the first large function since I began my tenure as general manager. I feel that unfortunately in the areas which you mention, within your review, we fell below our usual benchmark. We have already completed an analysis of the positives and negatives from this weekend, and have already laid down plans to ensure we do not fall foul of such lapses in the future.

With regards to the temperature of the swimming pool, again unfortunately due to a mechanical failure in our pool plant room, the temperature dropped a couple of degrees below the recommended 29 degrees Celsius, and therefore it may have seemed slightly more chilly than normal. We have now rectified this issue and can assure you we would never try and keep it to a minimum temperature, but rather a level which is, hopefully, comfortable for all.

I have written to you privately, under separate cover, to further apologise.

I hope will have an opportunity of welcoming you back to The Royal Lion Hotel in the not too distant future, when I know the team will do their utmost to once again shine.

“A Good Place to Stay in Lyme”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

My husband and I stopped at The Royal Lion for a couple of nights in one of the balcony rooms. We visit Lyme regularly and normally stay at The Alexander but thought we'd give The Royal Lion a try as we have often eaten in the bar and have been impressed with the improvements made to the Hotel under the current ownership.

The room was comfortable and clean and had a wonderful view over the roof tops and out to sea. I'm really fussy about bathrooms and this one was spotless and well stocked. On the ground floor there's a games room and swimming pool which we didn't use but would be a real bonus if the weather was poor. One major positive for Lyme is the sizeable and secure car park - parking space is at a premium in the town.

Breakfast was very good: well cooked with lots of choice although we didn't quite understand why there was a need to charge a £2.50 supplement for a kipper. We ate in the bar one evening and had an enjoyable, well cooked meal.

Definitely somewhere we would stay again.

“excellant only one criticism”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

I have stayed before here and love it. The Balcony Room was superb lovely view of Stonebarrow and beyond. The hotel is spotless cannot fault such cleanliness but the only critism I had was when I ordered a cream tea the staff member whose english was not good did not quite understand my enquiry. When it arrived it was one scone and was not clotted cream it was double cream whipped up, apart from that was ok.
The Breakfast in the hotel was to die for but staff were too quick to take my plate away when i finished which I dont like.
I would definately stay again no doubt but staff who dont speak good english need to be more observant in the communication. but otherwise GREAT HOTEL

“Do not try the Afternoon Tea”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

The Royal Lion is a quaint historic hotel on Lyme's main street that has set up an afternoon tea display in the main window. Unfortunately, we were duped into assuming they really could produce afternoon tea. Instead, we got whatever they could scrabble together. At one point they even had to take items off the plate that had been sat in the window all day, uncovered! To add insult to injury they only give one scone and jam/cream per two people. Bizarre! We had thought of staying at the hotel and having dinner. However, if this is the best they can do with a simple tea then we will go elsewhere. Such a pity as the building is lovely.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent visit to The Royal Lion Hotel. I was concerned to learn you were disappointed with your experience.

Firstly let me apologise that on this occasion, we neither met your expectations, nor the standards we set ourselves at The Royal Lion Hotel. Having spoken to both the chef and the member of the team who served you, I understand that we had an unusually high number of afternoon teas that day, however I am reassured that items were not used from the display, even though these would have been freshly prepared that afternoon. I have asked the chef to review the standard offering for afternoon tea and carry out further training, in order to ensure that issues such as you have raised within your review do not occur in the future.

Thank you once again for your comments, we understand that it is only from gaining feedback, such as yours, that we can continue to build upon our well deserved reputation for warm hospitality and good food.

Yours sincerely
