After an initial warm welcome from the landlady, Sian, our stay at Damara house was soured by our rude and abruptly ushered exit.
It was our first stay in a B&B and, perhaps naively, we therefore didn’t realise that its apparently - according to Damara house - common place to vacate rooms by 1000AM, being accustomed to noon checkouts at hotels. At no point were we told the check out time, and having not being able to check in until after 1600PM, we didn’t for a minute assume it would be so early. However, at 1000AM sharp on the Sunday morning, our hostess hammered aggressively on the door declaring we had 5 minutes to vacate the room. Despite having just got into the shower myself, we hastily began to pack our things and prepare to depart. Less than 5 minutes later, there was another thump at the door, with the landlady shouting; “He’s still in the shower, I can hear him - you need to leave now or I’ll have to charge you another night”.
We gathered our things, and were making our way downstairs, dismayed at what had become a very uncomfortable and unnecessary situation. We were met by our landlady who demanded our voucher, as our stay had been a gift experience. After giving her the relevant documentation, and making for the door, we turned to say goodbye – not wanting to depart on bad terms – only to have the front door slammed in our face.
My girlfriend, a secondary school teacher well accustomed to volatile scenarios, was clearly upset and dismayed at this astounding rudeness, and knocked on the door to talk to the landlady. As she tried to express our disappointment at the tainting of our trip, she was further appalled to be told that we had been “taking the p!ss”. Again, the front door was slammed after no signs of apology.
Ultimately, we’ve never before received such poor levels of customer service, and we are still astounded at the sheer rudeness we experienced. Needless to say, we would not return to Damara house, nor recommend it to others.
