“Great food and lovely hotel room”

Stayed in Polzeath room in St Edmunds for three nights on a Rick Stein winter package deal. The deal included a 3 course meal each evening, one in the Seafood Restaurant, one in the Bistro and one in Stein's Cafe. Breakfast each morning was in the Seafood Restaurant. The Polzeath room was, as far as my wife and I were concerned, near perfect for a 3 night relaxing break. Breakfast meant a very short walk down to the Seafood Restaurant each morning that was bracing in the sea air - but might not have been so enjoyable had it been colder and wet. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfasts, not least because the menu offered rather more fish items than normal. The 3 dinners, however, were the hightlight of our stay. Inclusive deals often come with limitatations: a set menu divorced from the a-la-carte or a supplement if you want a more expensive dish. Not so with the Rich Stein deal. A three course meal (a starter, a main and a dessert) from the a-la-carte menu meant just that. Drinks (and side-dishes if you feel you need them) are extra, but, with every dish on the menu open to you, the world really is your oyster - or your lobster! So we did not stint ourselves, and the food and its service were suberb. The meals really did live up to our expectations. Padstow itself proved to be an ideal place for an early March break - mind you, the weather behaved itself for us. Any reservations? The deal that we enjoyed was extremely good value, but the normal bed and breakfast rate for the room, with dinner not included, would have made the whole thing more than we could have afforded. That is not to detract from the quality of room, the food and the service, but simply a fact of life for my wife and me.

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2011

When you go you know you are paying to stay at Rick Stein's hotel. We planned 4 days of indulgence! We stayed in Tregirls which was beautiful. It was on the lower floor which meant we had our own sun terrace and loungers. The only downside for us was the mix-up over dogs. We had emailed the hotel to ask where we could stay with two dogs. They advised St Edmunds and they quoted the price to add the dogs. We proceeded with the booking which stated the dogs were coming. On arrival the gentleman who showed us our room said this was ideal for the dogs and he closed the gates around the garden so that they could play. The following day we had a knock on our door from the Housekeeping who said they believed we had dogs in our room! We were told at this point that dogs were not allowed. We showed her our booking which had the dogs booked in. After lengthy discussion she said as long as the dogs were not seen or heard and did not use the garden we could stay. When you are paying that much money you don't want to be made to feel like you have to hide away. So we decided to cancel our next three nights. I was very upset and when I asked to have my booking cancelled without penalty as it was clearly their mistake. But the management could not have been more accommodating. They advised we should stay and that we could take our dogs to eat with us, we had tables set up away from other people and we were given a complimentary bottle of champagne to have on our terrace. So that was our only blip which was rectified. We found the restaurants to be superb. The service was great. The location was wonderful. We won't go back because you cant take dogs... if you could we would return. But we had a really lovely time, and for a special occasion it is well worth it.

“great room breakfast is a joke”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2010

We stayed complimentary for one night in the Trevone room as an apology for the state of our room (Porthcothan - Prospect House) and service we received on our last stay in June 2010.

The room is lovely with great views, there are french doors with a Juliet balcony ( a room on the ground floor is a good idea as you have your own personal terrace and sun beds).
The room is large with a clean and fresh decor, this room is not suitable for the less mobile or tall people. Not only is it on the first floor with no lift, there are two or three steps into the rooms and the bathroom with separate bath and shower, is on the next floor the stairs are narrow and with a tight turn. There are beams in the bathroom which means you have to keep minding your head, even at 5' 8" I had to be careful not to bang my head.

The garden is nice to sit in.

Breakfast is taken at the seafood restaurant, again this was a bad experience. I think there were 9 tables seated whilst we were having breakfast and we heard at least 5 complain or chase something up at some point. The continental selection is small but the fruit was very good. The hot drinks we ordered were put on another couples table whilst they were out of their seats, so the waitress was confused when she went to serve their drinks. I explained that I thought they'd got ours so she then came over to try to give us theirs- we hadn't ordered the same and she didn't like the fact she had to change them.
My husband ordered the full English which was good, I ordered the kedgeree which after 4 mouthfuls I couldn't eat, it was so peppery my tongue was on fire! (I can eat a vindaloo)
We do like Padstow but don't think we will return to any of Rick Steins Hotels as you really do pay for the name.

“We had a wonderful stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2009

I stayed here for 2 nights during August for a special occasion. We were in the Tregirls room which was very large and spacious, ther were patio doors that lead to 2 sun loungers and a lovely bathroom with a very large deep tub. It was furnsihed very plainly yes, but I believe it was decorated to suit the envirnment and my parner and I loved the room and our stay. It was also immaculately clean however is it worth £265 per night? Definately not! It wasnt luxury and we were paying for the label of Mr Stein. Was it worth it? Well on this one occasion yes, we had a great time, not too far from anything and it was a lovely room. Next time I will probably stay somewhere else but I would definately return as the restaurants were excellent - although NOT in August, ithe entire area was too busy!
Padstow was very ,very crowded and I half expected this being August but you'd be better off visiting during another month really - as the crowds kill the beauty and intimacy of such a tiny place.
I am quite surpirsed by all the complaining about the distance from the seafood restaurant - its not that far! St Edmunds is just tucked behind it - ok its not on the doorstep but it takes approx 2-3 mins to walk round to it!
Yes the staff are a bit sharp and cold but otherwise we had a great stay. It was worth coming here and staying on this special occasion but next time would stay elsewhere and book to go to the seafood restaurant HOWEVER if the cost wasnt so ridiculously high than I'd be much more likely to return as this is the one thing putting me off.

“Little gem, tucked away behind the hustle and bustle of Padstow”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2009

Returned from 3 days in Padstow, having stayed in the Treyarnon Room at St Edmund's House. It was perfect - the room was quiet, ideally placed for the restaurant (a very short walk down the hill), and had views out to the estuary. The 4-posted bed was enormous and had an en-suite bathroom, all tastefully decorated with shutters. As a guest you receive a discount voucher for the Stein shops/cafes. Usefully placed in the room was a well-thumbed guide to Padstow, including the walks around the town. There is a handy car-park for the guest-house immediately adjacent to St.Edmunds. It was perfect and I'd definitely go back.
