We have often treated ourselves to a meal in one of Rick Stein’s establishments but this is the first time we have stayed in St Edmund’s House. It should be noted that although these rooms appear under the Hotel category on Trip advisor, they are only rooms with no sitting room or lounge facilities normally associated with a quality hotel. I understand that we were allowed to use the lounge in St Petroc’s Hotel or have a coffee in the conservatory area of the Seafood restaurant if we wished but these are facilities are not in the same building. However these spotlessly clean rooms have quite a few important luxuries you expect if treating yourself for 2 or 3 nights stay. The luxuries include a large comfortable bed, very large white fluffy dressing gowns (I would think big enough for Rick himself?) matching fluffy bath sheets, Molton Brown toiletries & good quality toilet rolls. The furniture was basic with a rustic look but the large TV worked well, free WiFi always available & the stand alone bath & separate double shower ticked lots of the required boxes for the both of us. Be warned if you stay in the Trevone room that the bathroom requires going up several very steep & narrow stairs, ok in the day but difficult to negotiate in the middle of the night or if unsteady on your feet. I also recommend parking behind the St Edmund’s House before you sign in; this ensures a parking place & makes transporting luggage to your room much easier. It is only a short walk down to the Seafood restaurant for breakfast in the morning & an umbrella is provided in the room if required. Breakfast in this restaurant is excellent with fresh orange & grapefruit juice, a good selection of fruit including fresh raspberries & strawberries every morning we were there. We then chose from a very “fishy” cooked breakfast menu that included Grilled Sea Bass, Grilled Kippers, Smoked Haddock, or Smoked Salmon with scrambled eggs. Traditional cooked bacon & eggs, black pudding etc or a large omelette with mushroom filling was also available. Finally, the staff were wonderful, always trying to make your stay very special (and it was) & that is why we will try & make sure it is not too long before we go back again.
