“A Splendid Seaside B & B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

We stayed only one night to break-up a journey from Fort William to our home near Newcastle. The journey down had been horrendous, with torrential rain and flooded roads. We were in need of a good resting place. North Berwick is a place we love and took the opportunity to take our break there. The B & B is above a Café-Bar just off the main street, however, during the winter months it should be noted that the Cafe-Bar is not open to the public until the weekend. That said B & B guests are still served breakfast in the cafe; and what a breakfast it is. Even though we were the only guests (4 others had cancelled as their work on Bass Rock was stopped due to poor weather), a full variety of cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurts, cheeses and cold meats were laid out for our selection; plus a full breakfast menu of hot dishes. I had the poached smoked haddock with a poached egg, a very generous portion and my wife had a similar portion of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Well cooked and presented. Our room was lovely and had recently been freshened up with new paint and was tastefully furnished. There was a modern shower room and toilet en-suite. Another favourable facility is the free small B & B only car park, at the rear of the property and accessed through the main public car park. We would highly recommend this B & B.

“A well-run and well-placed b&b in North Berwick”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

I was one of a group of golfers who took over the whole place for three nights. First, it is well-placed - the High Street is a few paces away, North Berwick Golf Club is a moderate walk away and there is an excellent pub, the Ship, just over the road and it has a good selection of real ales.

My single room was small, but it was at the back of the hotel and was quiet. Karolina looked after us very well indeed and there was a good choice of food for breakfast.

“It misses the boat”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

This is a "sister" hotel to the Nether Abbey Hotel, which is my favourite place to stay in the whole of the UK, so although I knew it was a low key, B&B sort of place, I was still expecting an exceptional place. I didn't like it one little bit, I am afraid. The room was ill thought out (there was only one chair in a double room, and the TV has to be viewed through the vertical bars of the bed's foot-piece - there's no place in the bathroom to put a bag of toiletries, the windows were filthy and wouldn't open, there was only two tea bags and not one biscuit). As you walk across the dining room, you stick to the floor, the balustrade up to the bedrooms is similarly sticky with dirt, etc. Dark brown is the favourite colour of the designer it would seem - I felt in a 60s time warp. Other guests' activity is clearly audible - early morning ablutions carry throughout the place, the church's metallic chiming of each hour could be either charming or quite a disturbance through the night, depending on how lightly you sleep. Nope, didn't like it at all. Not cheap either. The manageress is ... distracted and too busy.
