“Fantastic. Faultless.”
I took my husband to Littlecote for his 40th birthday, because it was quite local, and having kids, we've been to Butlins, and as Warners is part of the same group, we roughly knew what to expect.
The house and grounds are absolutely beautiful, and steeped in history.
I booked a 2 night mid-week break, and although it was lovely, it just wasn't long enough!
I booked the up-graded 'historic room', which includes an allocated parking space, early check-in, welcome pack, use of bathrobes, and complimentary slippers, and one night's dining in the Al a carte restaurant.
We were allocated the 'Stuart Suite'. It was absolutely amazing! The room was huge, with a beautiful view over the front garden. It had a large TV, tea and coffee facilities, sofa, armchairs and an ensuite shower room. There was a 'mini bar', but all that was was an empty mini fridge, although you could have that stocked up. The fridge would be handy if you were staying in the summer months, because for someone like my husband who doesn't drink tea or coffee, you could fill it with cold drinks.
Although our room was huge, it was so cosy and warm. In fact, if there was a criticism i would make, it's that the room for us, was too hot at night, as we don't have the heating on over night at home. However, after speaking to another couple who had booked a 'Royal room', they had been disappointed because their room was small, dark and cold, and looked over the carpark! So, my advice would be, that for what little difference there is between the Royal and Historic rooms, it's worth paying that little bit more.
The meals were fantastic, and the waitress service was fast and efficient. In the 'Popham' restaurant (the main restaurant) the waitress/waiter, brings the starter, and dessert to the table, and you can either opt for the carvery which you select yourself, or one of the meals from the menu, which they bring to the table. Iced tap water and tea/coffee are included with the meal, however, you do pay for other soft drinks or alcohol.
As part of our break, we were also entitled to a meal in 'Olivers Bistro'. The food and service here again were superb. During your stay you can up-grade to Olivers Bistro for £10 per person, and it is well worth it.
My husbands birthday fell on the night that we were booked into Olivers, and for £12, i had arranged a celebration package, where the table was decorated, and he received a balloon etc. Again, this was well worth it if you have something to celebrate.
Although we did the tour of the house (£3 per person), we did not use any of the other facilities, so it i can't comment on those, except to say that the pool had long opening hours (7.30-9 pm, i think), which, generally when we've been away with the kids, has been one of our gripes. Incidentally, the tour was well worth the money! We did go to the entertainment theatre one evening for an hour or so, and the team really made an effort, however, like all these holiday places, the tables fill up quickly!
For those who like history, the house has it by the bucket load! What we did find suprising though, was that it was all so accessible. For example, the silk wall paper in the Chinese room, is valued at around £50,000 per panel, but it wasn't protected behind glass/perspex panels.
For us, i did find the break quite expensive (£400 for two nights), however, as a treat it was well worth it, and we'd definitely do it again!
To finish up, those staying in the new building seemed to have insufficient parking spaces, because we noticed a number of cars parking on the side road, although i could be wrong, but its worth bearing in mind if you have a swanky car! Also, if you're in the old house, Pophams restaurant is in another building, so you will have to brave the elements to eat!
