“Pretty good,,, but”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Good location, friendly staff, clean rooms, comfortable bed, a real nice pub, not so bad. But,,, the internet is very bad, it constantly makes you re log in just to stay connected, and signal strength, at least in my room, was poor. Also, avoid my room #32 or any rooms facing the main road, the car noise will be well apparent at 6 AM in the morning. The bathroom is fair, no place to hand my toiletry bag, the shower spills water onto the floor, which makes it slippery and dangerous. Not all the bad things noted are easily fixable. My only other disappointment was with breakfast, its always the same, a little cup of coffee, ugggg, same buffet, why can't they mix it up, maybe this is just the English way, but by day three I was ready for an Egg McMuffin. A nice place if you get the right room and if they could fix the little things.

“A very mixed experience”

Booked direct with hotel and was offered Internet rates. Hotel easy to find, free parking immediately adjacent. Receptionist efficient but no personality so no welcome. Passing assistant manager offered to carry bags to room. Room overlooking courtyard, quiet, well furnished and clean but despite knowing we were coming the heating had not been turned on, the room took a full half hour to warm up. Small towel rail in bathroom so bathroom remained cold especially because of draught from I'll fitting sash window. Receptionist was 'put out' because we asked to order dinner as we checked in, she had to go and find someone - yes the very helpful asst mangr. Dinner was arranged for 20 mins in the bar - the restaurant wasn't being used. As we sat down we were entertained by the antics of a small rat or large mouse scuttling across the floor! Pheasant was tough and shiitake mushrooms made a strange contrast. Sea Bream excellent although fennell not cooked. Fair value for money. Coffee poor and made by Automat. Room very comfortable with proper king size bed (ie not two singles zipped together) - a good nights sleep was had. Breakfast until 0930 - waitress told us we had three minutes to order cooked food otherwise we'd miss it - the two Americans who arrived in the restaurant after us actually had to pursue the waitress as she took away the food at 0930. I started with cereal but was less than impressed to discover the milk provided in a jug on the buffet table had gone sour! Cooked food was excellent. Checkout was mechanical and we were not allowed the 10% discount on the food part of the bill promised by the voucher we found in the room. None of the staff seemed to speak with each other - there was no evidence of a teamwork. Asst mangr was a star.

I do wish guests would at least let us know if things were not to their liking or wrong whilst staying with us, so we have an opportunity to correct them and thus improve their stay. My over riding aim is to have happy guests that want to return.

We try so hard to get things right, but at times things seem to go against us. Being a 14th century coaching Inn, just sometimes 'mickey mouse' makes an appearance despite a good pest control contract and the hotel cat! The weather last week was mild and the heating was back on it's time clock as the building had got so hot, hence the heating was not on at the time the guest checked in. The staff always try to be as helpful as possible, sometimes with English not being their first language, they may come across as direct or unhelpful which is never their intension and on these ocassions both members of staff simply didn't phase things well for which I apologise.

I always act on all guest comments and infact there was a comment card in the guests room that wasn't used; I have no problem with guests using Trip Advisor, but could they at least give us a chance to rectify issues which could hopefully improve the enjoyment of their stay which is very important to me.

Colin Heaney. General Manager.

“Delightful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

Absolutely delightful Hotel. Comfortable, clean, quaint rooms. Very reasonably priced indeed. There is such a feeling of history about the hotel that it makes it that more special. The food is excellent and the staff very polite, pleasant and helpful. A group of us travelled to the UK from all over Europe for meetings and we stayed for one night and had dinner at The Bear. All 26 people in our group thoroughly enjoyed their stay. We will definitely be using this hotel again and I will also recommend it to other colleagues when they are visiting our head office in Newbury.

Please continue with the same quality and high standards as it would be a shame to lapse into a "laid back attitude". The continued success of the hotel depends on the keeping up of high standards and competitive prices.

Room Tip: A couple of our group complained a little about rooms that face the main street and that there was s...

“One of my favourite hotels”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011 via mobile

Whenever I travel back to the UK to see my family in Hungerford I always stay here. The rooms and service are excellent. The hotel has so much history too. The management have renovated the property perfectly and I hope they continue to be successful to maintain the high standards.

“Excellent Venue for Business Event”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2011

I have just been to a business event hosted at The Bear in Hungerford. There was ample parking, the breakfast although served to over 40 people, was fresh, delicious and served with discretion and courtesy. The event was a success on my part, and judging by the relaxed and exciting atmosphere of the rest of the room - I would say a resounding success for everyone in attendance. After the event we went to the Bar for coffee - where the staff were equally helpful and accommodating. I noted that several of my fellow attendees to the event had also joined me to catch-up & work in relaxed, comfortable surroundings - a perfect place for an informal meeting. We will definately be back when I have meetings in the area!
