“Souless and expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Was really excited about staying at The Parador due to its location, and what i had read in brochures/website. It was the most expensive of the hotels we chose on the island and the only one we didn't really enjoy. It just lacked soul, once the sun went down we expected to sit by the fire as i had seen on the website, but instead found a bar/lounge with no bar man and an unlit fire. As there is nothing to do other than eat dinner in their rather pricey restaurant it was pretty boring! Our room was clean and spacious, but the heating was limited and we were cold throughout the night as its very cold up at that altitude. It was definitely an experience being there overnight, but not one i would repeat. In my opinion its much better to travel down the mountain and get much more reasonably priced accommodation after a day looking round the Teide park. Its a shame as i was really looking forward to being there, but was left feeling strangely disatisfied with it all.

Room Tip: Save you Euros, and just settle for a day trip!

“The location makes it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

The setting is amazing and this makes up for a variable hotel stay experience. Very little information is given so basic things like check-in/out time, parking facilities, restaurant opening remain a secret until arrival. We visited mid-week but there were still quite a few guests staying.
Check-in felt more like entering another country. The welcome wasn't very friendly and the first words were passports please! Our room was spacious with a large bathroom and an enclosed balcony, purchased through a discount for 'Golden Years' which apparently start if either one of you is over 55!
We went off to discover the bar and lounge which is quite cosy and at 4 o'clock it was completely devoid of staff. We ended up having a beer, sat outside the cafe next door relaxing in the afternoon sunshine.

The restaurant opened at 12 and served right through to 10pm. We joined up with another couple for dinner who we had met in the lounge earlier. Both of them were fluent in Spanish and I think that this made a big difference to breaking through the very formal approach we had been getting from the staff.
The menu was very Canarian influenced. I had cabrito (kid) and my wife salmarejo (rabbit) washed down with local wine from La Oratava. The whole meal was well cooked and delicious. We had booked half-board so the meal was included, but we could have had a full three course meal anything off the menu for around €32 each.
After the meal, of course, it was out into the cold (bring something warm!) to see the stars. Wonderful clear sky at 2000m gives an amazing view of the heavens.
Warning to those who might want a wee dram after being out in the cold. The bar and restaurant shuts at 10:20 precisely.
Breakfast is very good and caters for every palate. Check out is at 12:00.
We decided to check out before going on a little 4km hike round Los Roques (just opposite the Parador). Just as well because I'd not noticed that there was over 150m rise and fall along the way and it took us over 2 hours to complete!

Room Tip: We stayed in a room (111) with a balcony, which gives great views out. The balcony is totally enclos...

“Location!”

Great views from our room ( no 101). Lots of stars in the night. Food ok. I would recommend it very much because of the location.

“Modest parador hotel in wonderful location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

We stayed 4 nights in this hotel at the foot of the Teide volcano. The hotel is remote so a car is of the essence if you want to remain mobile. it is located at 2200 m altidude in the middle of the caldera of the Teide national park. The cable car that brings you to the top of the volcano is a four five kilometers away. Some of the rooms have a view of the volcano but with the windows being rather small and the other rooms offering nice views as well, it is not necessarily worth paying the extra amount of money for a room with the view as they are identical to all the other rooms in any other respect (lay-out, size, bathroom etc.). The mattrasses are a little beyond their sell-by date but passable, the bathrooms could do with a major renovation. There is no wifi in the rooms nor in the rest of the hotel. If you'll need the internet you'll have to request at reception whether they can let you use their office connection for a short while. The restaurant serves decent and reasonably priced food. You may feel that choices are limited all the more so since the hotel is the only inhabited place in a 40 km radius. Although rooms have double glazing, the window frames are not well constructed and the wind blows through them (you can actually see through some of the openings. This in combination with the cold nights at this altitude can be a problem for those who like a warm room. The public spaces are cozy and an open fire is lit at some evenings. Furthermore the hotel offers a heated swimming pool (no extra charge). The hotel sold us a 5-nights card which expired on the date we checked out (29/12) leaving us with one night (we only stayed four nights) that we had paid for but which we couldn't possibly use. Swindling your guests this is called I believ.

Room Tip: The rooms all have nice views and are all virtually identical (except for the suite). The rooms loo...

“Incredibly disappointing. Awful, very unhelpful, refused to serve all food - restaurant or bar sandwich- although had signs adv”

Amazingly awful, unhelpful staff, extremely poor food- in that it was non-existant. I had expected poor value and high cost - but I had not expected to check that they were open and serving, therefore arrive, to only then be told no food could be served as either a bar or restaurant menu. Apparently they are full. There was the four of us and another 7 people only visible in the hour I waited before going onto the observatory - which is amazing.

So good location, and essentially worth looking at the mountain - but bring your own water and sandwiches!!! Very poor service!
