“Beautiful pool, spacious rooms and great food”

We booked in here for one night last minute in August 2010, which means we probably paid over the odds for our room - lesson learnt! Having said that, although I dont think its worth what we paid we were very pleasantly surprised. It has a fantastic pool area and the rooms are really lovely. We had dinner there that night which was cooked fresh on the barbeque! Only drawback is the location - its about 8 miles from Tarifa and extremely difficult to get around without a car! Would definitely recommend!

“Dinner at Punta Sur”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2010

Cannot comment on the hotel, as we did not stay at Punta Sur, but judging by the meal we had there I would NEVER stay there.
Dinner was absolutely third rate.
As a starter I had the Spring rolls: Two anaemic looking rolls with some stuff (difficult to describe what it was) inside. All this on a huge bed of various bit of greenery.
Main course: Risotto with (supposedly) 3 kinds of mushrooms. First of all the rice was luke warm lumpy and sticky seemingly (slightly heated up left over) Basmati (certainly not risotto rice). As for the 3 kinds of mushrooms, I found a bit of some sort of mushroom here and there. The desert I wanted was "off".
My partner had very tough "grilled" artichoke hearts, swimming in oil.
Main course skewer of fish, which apparently was completely tasteless but had huge pieces of fairly cold onions included.
Desert: crême brulée, which was excellent.
The service was definitely very offhand, the bill charged twice for the one desert. This was immediately rectified when pointed out.
I understand this establishment has the same owner as the Hurricane Hotel.
It bears absolutely no comparison with this long established excellent place.
We had dined at the Hurricane the two previous nights and found the staff there extemely friendly and efficient. The food was delicious. It seems incomprehensible that these two establishment are owned by the same person. The dining experience could not be more different.

“4th time -just gets better......”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2010

Just back from our fourth and best stay here. We had a wonderfully relaxing week here, the Punta Sur is just such an ideal blend of laid backness and wonderful service. The pool remains fabulous, the rooms extremely spacious and for the first time we ate in the restaurant. The food is lovely and the service friendly and amazingly efficient. The staff work so hard and deserve a huge pat on the back for always delivering food and drinks quickly even when they are rushed off their feet - which is most of the time given how popular the restaurant is. Nothing beats sitting out all evening in the relaxed setting of the restaurant. Our girls (13 and 12) met so many kids throughout the week, they had a fantastic time. A fantastic holiday - can't wait to return.

“Tarifa gem”

With my friend visiting me in Gibraltar from the UK we wanted to get away from the Rock for a few days and were lucky enough to get a cancellation at Punta Sur. I'd been to the Hurricane (sister hotel) down the road many times for lunch and to enjoy the surroundings but did not know the Punta Sur. I'm glad I've now discovered this hotel: comfortable and spacious family suites (my son came with us) with good bathrooms, rooms are very private because of the 'bungalow' style of the suites set in the gardens with your own private fully hedge-screened grassed terrace, great pool and restaurant and generous and varied buffet breakfast. We loved the roaming peacocks and the bridge over the terrapin-filled pond! Tennis court and lovely outdoor dining. Plus, you can enjoy all the facilities and the beach at the Hurricane. Staff charming and helpful, there's an air of unhurried calm, even though there were many families with children, young and teenage, staying. The hotel was full but it didn't seem at all crowded. A wonderful escape, only wish we had booked earlier and could have stayed longer.

“Beautiful grounds, good location for wind-seekers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2010

My wife and I stayed at the Punta Sur for only one night. The room was very spacious with a good bed and nice bathroom, only it felt like we were the first ones to stay there for the summer so it was extremely damp and musty smelling when we arrived. We also noticed many spider webs around the room and the overall feel that it had not been used in a while. Our room had a small outside courtyard as well.

The grounds of the hotel are very nice with a great pool area and large pond area with a cute wooden bridge. The main building is very comfortable and provides space to hang out. It appears that they have a large outdoor sitting/lounging space in the warmer months as well.

As most visitors to this area know, it can be very windy so keep that in mind if you are looking for a sun bathing vacation because the wind may keep you off the beach. It was still low(ish) season so the hotel was not very crowded and neither were the neighboring places, but it feels like it is probably a great atmosphere in July/August when all the wind surfers and kite surfers are around and looking to party. The beach across from the hotel is pretty rocky and accessed over the road and through some fields.

The staff at the hotel were friendly enough, but not overly helpful or informative. The hotel was pretty quiet overall, but as I said before, I think this was the time of year. I would be very interested to know how different this place might have been if it was July.
