My accommodations fell through and I was in a bind when I arrived in Nerja just after sunset. My guidebook recommended a few hostels but all were closed in January. Although Rick Steves didn't give the Hotel Plaza Cavana a glowing recommendation, I do. The front desk people were excellent. They gave me an unbeatable price, and, ironically, an additional 5% off with the Rick Steves book. For $25/night for 3 nights I was given a second floor corner room overlooking the square.
The hotel itself has some great features: central location, a good bar, wifi in the lobby, free breakfast, an indoor pool and gym that never seemed to be in use, a rooftop pool that was a little chilly in January but would be heaven in the summer heat, and a hilarious car elevator for the underground parking.
If you are with young kids, be cautious in the showers at this hotel - the taps get very hot. Make sure you have a good map because Nerja is a little confusing to drive in. Skip the over commercialized Nerja caves, but go to Ayo's on Burriana Beach and enjoy the paella!
