“Enjoyable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Having stayed at a lot of Rius I would say this is the least attractive as it's not the Disney style more recent type of building and the decor is a little dated and tired. That said the food was great and the position re town and beach was perfect. Parking is not good so if you dont need a hire car (and you dont if you're only there for a week) don't get one. If you do you may have to park it some distance away & if you park where you shouldn't it'll get towed away (we saw this). Another thing re car hire the price for one day for a KIA in hotel from Europcar was 66euro which is what we paid for a fortnight for our KIA with economycarhire.
The hotel indoor pool is great although a little small and any room near the bar gets noise until the shows finish - but that's ok if you're at the show & not trying to sleep. The room was very clean indeed (apart from a pair of stray socks under the bed but carpet very stained - they ought to have wood floors. We were there when the temp was -1 at night but we were warm enough with the heating and blankets & extra pillows are available. The clientele as mentioned before is predominantly aged (very) and German. Children arent exactly welcomed with open arms although it is ideal for parents with small children if you can ignore the disapproving looks from some of the guests. There are a lot of folk with sticks & frames etc -I think it is a very good alternative to a care home for those who cant manage alone at home and need their meals provided and their bed changed & made & room cleaned and like sun and company. It would be cheaper than staying at home and paying for heating & a carer. What's not to like ;-) - I shall bear it in mind for 30 years time.

“30th Anniversary”

What can you say that hasn't already been said, my husband and I stayed here on the 12th December for our 30th wedding anniversary and we will certainly be returning. The food was excellent the people that we met who were all returning guests says it all. We were given a lovely bottle of bubbly as a gift and when we went to get our dessert we returned to find a lovely cake at the table. The staff are all very attentive, and pleasant if there was any down side then the bathrooms could do with a bet shower, but hey if thats the only thing to worry about then its not a problem. We enjoyed it so much we will be returning this December for 2 weeks.

“Another great holiday at Riu Monica.”

We returned to the Monica with Thomson holidays for a two week vacation. Weather was excellent as well the hotel. The only downside was the return transfer which got us to Malaga airport much too early and meant we missed a proper breakfast.

“what a lovely winter break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

on arrival we received a really warm and friendly welcome by the thomson rep at the hotel and lola on reception, we were treated to a glass of sparkling wine or friut jiuce, we had e-mailed before to ask for a room on a higher floorl, and wow we were not disapointed, we had only booked 4 days before, we had room 642 and the views were spectacular of the coast, we could here the waves as well which is my idea of bliss.
the rooms were very clean and well maintained by the lovely maids, we had plenty of towels and free toiletries which were re- plenished each day, mini bar and the prices were quite reasonable, lots of drawer and wardrobe space, 16 euros for the safe in your room.we were informed by the rep that you could ask for matress toppers if you found the beds hard which we didnt and we are used to a feather mattress topper at home.
the food was very good with lots of choice, free sparkling wine a couple of times and freshly made smoothies, the choice of deserts were very good, we were half board and did eat at the pool bar one lunchtime and the food was very good, the staff are all very friendly and the manager is always around which is nice to see, he and some of the other staff even came to our welcome meeting, which i had not seen before.the hotel grounds and position of the hotel is excellent- right on the front, with an outside pool and a lovely warm indoor pool, would love to return to this hotel, it was so relaxing.

Room Tip: top floor room, the even numbered rooms have a better view i think.

“The number of returning guests says it all”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We returned yesterday having had 6 warm days around the pool and one wet day with thunderstorms, so taking a few jumpers and a coat for the colder evenings and shorts for around the pool was about right.
The hotel was very good and set up this time of the year for the more mature guests, a minor complaint was hearing running water whenever somebody flushed a toilet or shower/bath in a nearby room in the early mornings (some rise quite early) and the serving layout of the hot food for the evening meal, guests pick up a plate from either side meet in the middle and then try to get back into the opposite line for something that they have missed ? minor points which would not deter a return to this hotel for a winter break.
The main bus station on Calle De Pescia was a 10 minute walk up a slight gradient or you could catch the hourly bus just to the right outside hotel front, from there we caught a bus to Frigiliana well worth a little look around, stop in one of the lovely tapas bars with a view you will not be sorry.
Also from the main bus station we caught the bus to Granada for 18 euros return, on arrival we went outside the Granada main bus station and caught the 3 or 33 bus and got off when we saw the Grand via Hotel on the right (cathedral stop).
Just along street at the next bus top we took the number 30 smaller shuttle bus to the Alhambra Palace, the entrance fee for Alhambra was 13 euros for a set entrance time but be careful you have a good 10min walk from where you purchase the ticket to the point where you enter Palace.
On return when you get off the number 30 bus in Granada, immediately alongside there is a small street which has a range of bazaar type shops and some tapas bars if you require food. we caught the 5.30 pm bus back to Nerja on a very different scenic route over the mountains but sadly missed our late evening meal.
In Nerja we visited Cafe Mandarina which regretfully is closed on the w/ends which is straight in front of you when walking away from the Balcon, tucked into the right corner 6 tapas and a drink for 5 euros, Vicente was closed whenever we passed which was a shame we would have liked to have tried the tapas there up on Calle Malaga.
We enjoy walking and found when leaving the hotel on the beachfront if we walked to the right there's a nice walkway up into the town, we found getting to Burriana beach a little more difficult but ended up looking out for Hotel Parador De Nerja and the walkway down to beach there.
We found the Hotel entertainment for the mature audience and the Cruzcampo not to our taste so in the evenings we frequented the Bars outside the front of the hotel and also for viewing sport to the right to El Bosque Bar at Calle Castilla Perez.
