“cheap but noisy castilla”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2009

We had stayed one week in nerja (see other review under marinas de nerja hotel) and had booked 2 nights in antequera at the Hotel Castilla. Antequera was much bigger than I expected and very noisy with traffic, particularly those horrendous scooters which are everywhere in this region. However it had an interesting old town, quiet! and a fascinating castle and fortress to explore. Because of the noise we only stayed one night - the hotel castilla was extremely noisy at night, even though we had a room on the side. We could still hear the traffic, the windows were not double glazed, and even more disturbing was the sound of a garage or apartment block door being opened and closed several times during the night - with a very loud clatter and banging. The plumbing in the hotel was also very disturbing, clanking pipes and rushing water sounds. Not a wink of sleep was had! The room was very basic (of course we had been spoiled at the Marinas de Nerja) and rather gloomy. The only good thing was the friendliness of the owners and the food, which was excellent and reasonably priced. Parking in Antequera is horrendous but the hotel provides parking nearby for 7 euros a day. I suppose you could say you get what you pay for, as the room was only 40 euros per night, but for me a good night's sleep is essential. So we moved on to 'El Chorro and on the way there we found Casa Anna, a lovely B & B in a quiet spot, ensuite, tea and coffee in the room, comfortable, outside seating area, delicious breakfast. with English bacon. All for 50 euros. Many thanks to Linda and Mick, the English owners. So, if you don't mind noise and want to stay in the heart of a city, choose Hotel Castilla, but if you want peace and quiet, but be close to a town (Alora was only a short drive away, a very Spanish town, lovely) and close to El Chorro with its gorgeous lakes and stunning gorge, go for Casa Anna!

“Friendly, clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2008

We stayed just one night in Hotel Castilla. For correspondance by email try in Spanish, because the owners do not speak a lot of English. The rooms are clean, more than enough space and a good size bathroom. For the moment they are renovating the top floor, but since we came after workhours no problem here. The beds are relatively hard, but this seems to be the case in almost every hostal and hotel in Spain! Breakfast is basic, dinner the same. I am sure there are much nicer restaurants in Antequera but the open after 9 p.m.
The hotel provides a much needed parkingspace just one block from the hotel for 7 Euro a day.
There were not a lot of tourists in Antequera, and the surroundings (natural park El Torcal) are amazing. If you want to avoid the stress and the noice of Malaga city try Antequera for one or two nights!
