“Make this your Portugal getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 February 2011

It wasn't our cheapest 2 nights in Portugal, but the Hotel's 'Romantic Package', 2 nights accommodation and dinner for two in the Restaurant was the most memorable.

We were probably lucky it was a little off-season, so we were upgraded to an enormous room, with a long, wide terrace overlooking the old town's medieval bridge and the cathedral, lovely by day, wonderful when lit up at night.

Service and the small extras were excellent, but the highlight was the meal in the Michelin star restaurant. Friendly, attentive service and a meal of extraordinary quality from start to finish.

We loved all of Portugal.

We'd go back to stay and eat at the Casa da Calcada without hesitation

“Absolutely charming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2010

One of the best hotels I've stayed in. We arrived early (11am) and was upgraded to a deluxe room - which was charming - a big, spacious room with a king size bed and rose petals sprinkled across the bed. Twice daily change of linens. Complimentary little chocolate box and mineral water.
Walk in wardrobe. Buffet breakfast was lovely with quality food. Service is excellent. Outdoor pool was pleasant - I had a swim one evening and just sat by the pool to read for a couple of hours in early Sept. We had perfect weather.
The interior decor is tastefully and elegantly done.
We had dinner in their Michelin recommended restaurant - absolute delight- dishes are creative and done with much passion. Lots of little complimentary dishes from the chef while waiting for our tasting menu to roll out. All in all, we had an absolutely brilliant 2 night stay.

“An good hotel but overall we were a bit disappointed.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2010

This was one where we felt Tripadvisor didn’t give a 100% correct impression. We had a (misguided and possibly badly researched) vision of a blissful chateau-like building with lovely gardens in a vineyard but … the garden is tiny, the hotel is surrounded by suburbs complete with a factory (or similar building surrounded by cranes) on the hilltop opposite! Unluckily in addition to this while we were visiting they were building a conservatory style conference centre next to the swimming pool. The pool had been main reason for picking this hotel over another so we were a little unhappy. Finally the hotel was clearly being used as a training / conference facility so as leisure travelers it was quite disconcerting when relaxing in the outside bar to be overwhelmed by folk on a fag / mobile phone breaks between sessions.
However as is apparent this hotel has its fans and we could never, ever give it less than four stars – despite some pretty serious downsides.
Pros
Staff were universally and without exception amazing and charming – in particular Annabel (sp?).
Restaurant was superb.
Hotel’s own white wine was delicious.
Cons
No wifi or internet in room
No coffee / tea in room
No safe in room
No DVD or video capability in room
No furniture on balcony (one of the reasons we booked the room type) and balcony tiny.
No advice before we arrived (as obvious tourists) that there was major construction round the pool and conference on.
No sensible casual dining option (although there were fabulous sandwiches).
In conclusion for a one night stopover as part of a tour it is a great place to have a memorable dinner but three nights was too long. Check if there is a conference as it will change the character of the hotel dramatically.

“Magnificent hotel – a must!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2010

Casa da Calcada is an excellent example of a perfect hotel.
Cosy and elegant decoration, superb service, top class restaurant (one of the best one Michelin star that I know) and some gardens to walk a little bit. You should drink the sparkling wine produced with the hotel grapes.
