It was a long and winding road off to the Pousada de Sao Goncalo, located high in the Marao Mountain range . The roads are curvy and wind higher and higher into the sky but off in the distance is the orange tiled roof with the blue and white paint and there stands the pousada ! Upon entering, it is cozy and with the feel of a hunting lodge set high in the countryside overlooking magnificent views of the mountain range and that windy road you just arrived on.The location is conveniently located for day tripping off to Amarante or to the famous Mateus Palace. It is a small pousada with a large common room with large windows and sofas to sink into with a glass of local wine or a pot of tea . Upstairs and in the surrounding foyer are the bedrooms with plaid and tartan spreads, pretty decor and with a lodge kind of feeling . The beds and rooms overall were comfortable and the views outside the window were mesmerizing especially when the fog rolled in. OUtside is a treat with a gorgeous and inviting pool overlooking the mountains. Additionally thereis a wellness spa full equipped for massage, jacuzzi, steam room or sauna. It was impeccably decorated and very relaxing after a day of sightseeing. Total bliss ! Guests can enjoy drinks out on the terrace with many private areas to sit back and enjoy the area and views from every angle. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are also served. Everything was delicious and it was a treat to try the Regional sausages and cheese. We treated ourselves to a lovely evening meal which was excellent in selections, taste and price. The staff were extremely kind and attentive. It was a pleasurable stay and we enjoyed this pousada because of its small size, unique setting and most of all, the truly wonderful and warm staff. It is worth visiting this area and exploring the many towns around the Vila Real sourrounded by the natural beauty. It is a place that will stay with you long after you leave.
