“NICE PLACE BUT TYPICAL OF BAGNELL, CUTTING CORNERS”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2011

Was playing golf in Kells and decided to stop off at the Hilamar on my way home, BIG MISTAKE, while i was waiting for my meal i could hear Robert Bagnell openly run down customers for their appearence, language and even their accents, "not what you want to hear from the owner" the food was cold and served on a freezing cold plate and when i complained i was told " i dont get paid enough for this" and walked away. i thought she was gone for a fresh meal so i waited, im still waiting. half an hour later a young man passed by and asked why i hadnt eaten my steak i explained about what happened and he stormed off in a huff. i later found out it was Robert Bagnell junior, SURPRISE SURPRISE. No one came back to me after that so i left a fiver on the table " a lot more than the meal was worth" and left. Mr bagnell needs to take care of his customers and stop bad mouthing then. GOOD POINTS- Lovely clean hotel. BAD POINTS- Badly managed, food a disgrace, and someone needs to tell Bagnell snr and jnr they are no better than the rest of us.

“Would stay there again, not the best place in the world, but not the worst either.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 March 2011

Stayed on saturday the 20th of March. Nice modern hotel with large rooms. However they really need to put someone on reception, they just have a phone with a number to ring and then you have to wait until somone decides to come out to help you. We stayed for b&b , the breakfast was nice, your normal fri-up. I found the staff nice and friendly, Would stay there again, not the best place in the world, but not the worst either.

“Meal booked for approx 120 people - DISASTER”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2011

After a long and emotionally draining weekend at a family event, a two course meal and tea/coffee was booked at this hotel. Having attended a similar meal three years ago, we were looking forward to good things.

On the positive side the interiors of the function room are really lovely, heavy black curtains, black trimmed tablecloths, beautiful wallpaper here and there etc. The table settings looked lovely and everything very clean. Jugs of water with ice and slice lime and cranberry sauce on the table.

The negative side is unending:

30 minutes wait for starter to arrive, not worth the wait as the soup that did arrive was BURNT, it was so bad I couldn't stomach it.

After good 30 minutes again the main course of Beef started to arrive, plate by plate, with a good two minutes between each plate. After about 20 plates served the organiser of group realised that not only was the food FREEZING but even the plate was cold. All plates sent back and reheated. After all beef served they started on the Turkey and Ham.

The waiteress were that untrained they stood at the top of the room and shouted "beef" to which ever hand they saw first they rushed to that table. For that reason no table got served in succession. Manager was called and arrived with phone stuck to his ear and we saw him dash into the kitchen and arrive out with three plates and then disappear.

My Turkey and Ham was worst Iv ever tasted (and Iv had poor food before). It was like plastic, mashed potato was extremely over salted, lumpy and greyish looking, the carrot and turnip was chopped in large pieces and was hit and miss, one piece al dente, next piece pure mush which lead me to believe some of it was yesterday veg heated up. My plate and another plate at my table were missing the burnt dried up roast potato.

After about 20 minutes after watching waiteress running around finding teapots the tea/coffee arrived. The dinner plates weren't even collected and at this point I said to my waiteress how can we sort out cups when plates not collected. She pretended she didnt understand me and i had to collect five plates on my half of the table and place them in the center of the table as did the lady across from me. Both the tea and the coffee were disgusting.

The toilets were very nice but were never cleaned while we were there. The hand sink was the modern type that had the tap outside the sink itself which meant the granite work surface and the floor was soaking wet. It was made worse by the fact it took few minutes to figure out how the tap worked so your hand dripped water.

There was a function room bar but after a few drinks served the barperson disappear. The main bar was empty except for a middle aged couple who got two dinners at the bar, unhappy after an argument with the manager they left after tasting the dinner.

This manager later was seen dashing away in his car and the joke was "He was gone to the shop to get milk" as they ran out of it.

As I said I'v had poor food before and poor service but never had I had both together and at such a shocking degree.

“CRAP”

the worst place i have ever stayed in. The staff are rude the service is crap and the food is awful.I ordered salmon to be told that there was none as there wasd a problem with the suppliers!!! The place is full of dead plants and in need of a good clean. The old guys who have since found out is the owner is not one bit frendly in fact he is extremey rude to his staff and has a very fowl mouth as well. Because of the limited amount of food on offer( clearly they have no suppliers) i drove down to tescos in the town and bought some wedges and pizza from there deli and ate it in the car. Next morning have the breakfast menu was missing so we went acroos to granules cafe for breafast and it was lovely. Went to complain to a manager on check out was told there is none,

good points tesco and granules or there are a coyuple of b and b in the areas
bad points this place should not open to the public, iam not suprised tourism in this country is gone the way it is with crappy dumps like this

“Fantastic!!!!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2011

Myself and my work colleagues have enjoyed every minute of are stay at the hilamar hotel. The rooms are a large size and the showers are superb.Breakfast's "the works" are every mans dream.
Great credit should go to Dotty and Catriona for being the friendliest bar staff I have ever encountered on my travels.
