The true test of a hotel's resiliance and commitment quality customer service is seeing them solve a problem. After we showed up at 10 pm for a room we booked at 6:00 pm the same day, an exhausted staff (breaking down the tables after a big banquet) treated us very well and gave us some much needed alcohoic beverages after a LONG drive just before they closed the bar. They even gave a bottle of wine and glasses so we could drink wine at the Geysir late at night while it was tourist free and still light out. That night was probably the most memorable of the trip. We got back to the hotel to actually unlock our room (all room are duplex cabins with varying views of the valley behind the hotel) and were shocked to discover that the maid we saw cleaning rooms that night had forgotten our room and it there were used towels and sheets on the floor. It happens, no one is perfect. Within 15 minutes while we sipped red Icelandic wine and looked out at the valley, the staff had arranged a new, upgraded room at no charge for us and apologized profusely. They even offered free breakfasts for us, but we didn't see the need to cost them any more loss since we had an upgraded room and a wonderful evening. Even though they were booked up the next two nights, they squeezed us in and we enjoyed using the hotel as our home base for horse back riding, off road in our rented Super Jeep, geysir watching/toasting, and viewing the magnificant Gullfoss waterfalls. The room we had boasted a hot tub and complimentary robes. Bed was comfy, TV was small but enough to sleep to. WiFi in the restaurant in bar...not strong in the rooms. They have a computer for guest use at reception anyway.
The hotel's food was the best we had in Iceland...seriously. We never made a single breakfast meal (we sleep late) but the lunch was a carnival of Icelandic flavors that we went to twice. The dinner was so good that we both ate the same thing twice in a row.
I highly recommend this hotel, Hotel 101 in Rekyavik and the Northern Lights Inn on your last night at The Blue Lagoon. Iceland doesn't get better than that!
