“A GEM of a place - a bit careworn, but very clean and REALLY charming staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2009

We stayed here for three nights in July - we had two rooms on the top floor with the biggest terraces, I mean really HUGE, from which we could see almost 360 degrees. All the rooms have nice balconies, but guess we were just lucky to have these two rooms - it was not quite high season.

The rooms had good sized fridges, and we bought stuff at the local supermarket so we could have picnic lunches and evening drinks, watching the fabulous rocks of Meteora changing colour thought the day as the light changed.

The staff were absolutely charming, nothing was too much trouble for them (even providing a wine bucket and some ice for the wine I had bought from the supermarket, for instance).

Breakfast was excellent, a good selection of foods and prompt arrival of coffee and tea.

The pool was big, clean and we had it to ourselves mostly (!) - you need to take your own towels but there is a laundry just around the corner if you want them washed before you move on.

The bathrooms were very dated and tired, but very, very clean, so no complaints there!

My husband and I went off on a long hike one day and left our 17 and 14 year olds in the hotel, sleeping in and then playing in the pool, and we felt completely safe in the knowledge that the staff would just keep a gentle eye out for them.

Restaurant not operating at the time we stayed there - but a good taverna next door - so good we ate there twice. Another one up the road also very good. Kalambaka is a nice town.

Really,I cannot recommend this one enough - a very marvellous place, and excellent value (unlike the 5 star hotel Electra Palace in Thessaloniki !).

“Covered expectations if on the simple accommodations side”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2008

We went to Meteora on October 2008 which is becoming a major travel destination. Foreign travelers usually visit it on prearranged tours while nationals go on their own mainly as a pilgrimage trip. No doubt that this is a unique and wonderful place. Unfortunately, there are only two towns really close to the monasteries and the significant part of the trip: the small Kalambaka and the smaller Kastraki. Higher standard accommodations are tour groups hotels located outside of Kalambaka but these are more expensive and far from the opportunity of experiencing the town.
Taking that into account, the Edelweiss is a simple not pretending hotel. You will find from nice to very helpful staff depending on the shift. Breakfast is fair at most and there are good restaurant alternatives just next door or not more than two blocks from the hotel. Be sure that the rate that you are paying matches this service plus small and simple motel-type rooms.

“Edelweiss”

We stayed in Edelweiss in June 2008 for three nights. As we had come to Meteora to see the beautiful cliffs and visit the monasteries, we didn't spend much time in the hotel. In the morning we had breakfast there. It is not rich, but you also won't be starving: yogurt, bread, eggs, cheese (1 kind), sausages, jam ( tasty!), honey. What I didn't like there at all - it was tea. Horrible! Cold, not tasty, not strong.
There were 6 of us, and we had reserved 2 triple rooms. When we arrived they gave us 1 triple and 1 quadruple room (we didn't pay more). The rooms were on the 3-rd floor. As for the decoration, I can't say the rooms were nice. But they were clean, we also had hot water, and that was all we needed. Quadruple room was very spacious with 1 double bed and two single beds. It also had a long balcony, which overlooked the little square with a nice fountain and also offered a partial view of the famous cliffs. The triple room was smaller in size, and its balcony was much smaller also, but the view was great!
The staff was OK, no claims to them.
There is also a pool. Not very big, but quite enough to have a swim and recreate after the day, spent climbings the stairs to reach the monasteries settled on the top of the cliffs. One side of the pool was suitable for my daughter who is 8 years old, can't swim and whose hight is 132 cm. And you can also see the cliffs being in the pool!
All in all we are quite satisfied with Edelweiss hotel. It's rather simple, not new, but it served its purpose for us: place to sleep, place to dip :)

“The Monasteries of Meteora”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2008

We had an overnight stay as part of a tour of Greece and our first impression was that it was dated but clean.

Our first floor room was in need of decoration and had stains from old leaks from the aircon unit down one wall. The bathroom was small, but did the job.

The evening meal was served as a buffet selection and the belly pork was delicious - the buffet breakfast was adequate.

The hotel was clean, the rooms basic and in need of decoration and the meals as good as could be expected.

We didn't use the pool, but colleagues who did enjoyed it - we chose to spend our time looking at the cliffs and the monasteries of Meteora from our balcony.

  • Liked — The views of the monasteries
  • Disliked — The breakfast - expected fresh bread.

“Best of the Trip”

Length: 2 Nights

The Hotel Edelweisse was the best hotel I experianced while being in Europe for two weeks. The location in this small town was perfect. Right on the main drag but set back about 150 feet or so in one of the towns mainy beautiful squars.

The Hotel itself was spotllessly clean, and the maid arrived at around 11 the next day and remaid our beds wonderfully.

Their is a pool! It was very clean, very nice, and even has an amazing view or the cliffs from there. Out room 312, had an absolutly perfect unobstructed view of the monestaries and cliffs.

The stay includes a delicious buffet breakfast in their nice resturaunt and they gave us a "student discount" of ten euro so it was only 55 euro a night when we stayed (they even gave us two free tee shirts!)

The bathroom is small, but are you coming here to hang out in the bathroom? it was the biggest bathroom of any other 55 euro a night hotel i stayed it.

Highl reccommended, hope to stay there again if I ever make it back
