“Not the formal chateau, and not the Hilton. Which was exactly perfect”

We enjoyed our 3 night stay as part of a birthday event, and could not have enjoyed ourselves more. Charles Henri and Sofie made us feel welcomed. The Orangerie (formal garden) is stunningly well done and fragrant. If you are looking for 4 stars, and a generic room, or room service and someone to wait on you, do not come here. If you are looking for a stay in a welcoming B&B, with a real sense of adventure and experiencing chateau life, this is a great property. We stayed in the keep, in a room without electricity with bath down spiral stone stairs, but how many chances does one get in one's life to experience a room essentially unchanged in centuries; waking up to see exactly what one would have seen in the 15th or 16th century.

What can I say? This is a great vision of French country chateau life. Not for everyone, but if you are looking for a memorable experience, experiencing history, hospitality, and architecture, enjoy yourself. We did.

“Terrible”

We didn't want to stay, after we have seen the room and chateau itself, still the owner didn't want to give us the money back (I understand he needs money, but it's not our problem). The travelling agency, that we will never use the service again, finally gave us the half of the sum back after months of quarell.

“A soft-focused picture postcard”

The remote and natural beauty of the gardens, moat, orchard and resident horses may set this Chateau apart from others found on the beaten tracks surrounding the Loire. The accommodation within the castle was beautiful, but was by no means the standards you might expect in an expensive hotel. The stories described by the host (the Count) enabled the castle to become animated and this added a very interesting dimension. Evening drinks in the garden, the simple dinner dished out by the Count’s wife, and the affectionate tortoise shell cat added a personal touch to our short stay as guests, in what is essentially a family home. Like others, there were some irregularities to our bill however these were resolved with emailed records of our agreements. Over all this was an admittedly pricy, but none-the-less unique and worthwhile experience. We felt no qualms about paying the agreed expense as this would beat a luxury hotel for charm any day of the week. We also felt that the custom would help to preserve the Chateau— a symbol of French times past, as well as the soul of the property brought to life by those who care for the castle. We would certainly recommend this to others but would say not to expect the trappings of a top class hotel. This is a ‘homely’, ‘authentic’ Chateau experience set against a very pretty backdrop.

“What is it that Chateau de St Loup has, that bigger and finer chateaux don't?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2009

I felt welcomed here, much more so than at Chateaux de Villeray, de la Verrerie, de la Bourdaisiere or La Mas de Montet. I felt after a very short time that I was visiting close friends or family. Chateau de St Loup reeks with history, but this place definitely lacks the formality that I experienced elsewhere, and this is in its favour.

I loved visiting the horses with the hostess and patting those cheeky, gorgeous foals. I loved my discussion, in English, on the merits of real chateaux with the host, and exploring the grounds. I loved what the hostess considered 'a simple meal', exquisitely prepared by the hostess herself. I will never forget that wonderful onion tart. I loved the choice of champagne the host chose for aperitif, and would have been happy to pay for it. I loved my freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast.

I felt like I was given special treatment, and I wish to thank the host and hostess for a wonderful time. I was very sorry that I had to leave early, but I will most definitely be back.

“Nasty”

Our stay in the Hotel was one of the worst travel experiences we've ever had.
The whole "chateau" is in dire conditions not to mention the rooms which are filthy and worn out. The price is exorbitant for what it offers. By all means avoid this hotel!
