“Exceeded expectations!”

We booked on advice of the Times 2010 top 100 hotel in Europe. The hotel is situated in the picturesque, tiny village of St Jean aux Bois in Picardy which is one of the most beautiful parts of France and only 2 hours from Calais so the perfect stop over either heading to or from the UK. Although only 2 star rating the Augberge has been thoughtfully and beautifully designed both inside and out. Staff were helpful and friendly and the restaurant was excellent. All in all a wonderful one night stay and we hope to go again in the future.

“A lovely lovely place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2010

We have just returned from a road trip to France where we stayed at this hotel for one night. we had followed the Sunday Times reccomendation of the best hotels in France. We opted for the comfort room at €85 a night thinking it would be fine...it wasn't. Those rooms have not been refurbished for years and are not up to the standards of the rest of the hotel. We asked if they had any other availabile rooms and were showed a superior and a suite and oh my God, what a difference!! The suites were amazing and the superior was certainly much much better. In the end we were given the option of moving to the suite for a special price, so we did and were very very happy after that. We also had dinner at the restaurant and the food and wine was amazing! We spoke to the young chef Jilles - a former Gordon Ramsay alumni - a lovely guy, going for one Michlen star. The restaurant staff were great and we had a fantastic time.
The village is very nice as well and just at the limit with a big forest, shame we didn't have enough time to explore it more.
So, all in all, a great great place, but do spend a bit more and stay in a superior or even a suite, it's worth the extra cost!

“Keep driving, better nearby”

Had one disasterous night here, that couldn't be avoided. The staff were very friendly, but that was possibly the only thing the place had going for it. The paper thin walls allowed the noise of amorous adventures and even just conversation to carry straight through for nearby rooms. in the end I had to talk through the wall to tell my neighbours to be quite: The large off street parking was handy given the narrow road. The hotel looks ok from outside and indeed the corridors were quite charming; but the room was shabby, only half the lights worked, one hung off the wall. The bath height was almost to high for me to safely step into to shower, and the water took a long time to heat: personally would choose a hotel in (very) nearby Pierrefonds or Compiegne instead in preference !

“Absolute heaven”

We came across this lovely place when we were driving through the area. As it was the only restaurant open in the area we stopped for lunch. We had our very grubby toddler with us and the staff didn't bat an eyelid, although I wouldn't say this is the most child-friendly place (white linen tablecloths and fancy cutlery are the best toys in the world to my little boy). We were shown through to the immaculate conservatory dining area and served by very courteous waiters who were all very patient with our pidgen French. We chose the 35 euro set menu and I can honestly say it was one of the most amazing meals I have ever eaten. Good portion sizes with interesting ingredients. Only downside was the fact that there were only 2 choices for each course and no vegetarian option.

When we finished our lunch we lounged around in deckchairs in their lovely garden and there was no pressure from staff for us to leave. I wish I could eat here every week - it was paradise.

My wife and just I spent the weekend in this hotel, under an hour's drive from our home in Paris. Charming staff, good food, a beautiful location. In short France at its relaxed best.
