For us, this chateau was a stop-over, half way to and back from Tuscany. We chose it because it was close to the motorway, south of Dijon and could offer and evening meal. All we needed was peace, seclusion and food to break up a two day journey.
If we hadn't been in transit, we could easily have stayed longer. Flammerans is a small, quiet village and the Chateau has extensive grounds with a swimming pool and orangerie (with honour bar if you need it).
Our suite was light, airy and minimally decorated. The evening meal, prepared by Guy, was in itself worth the stay: typical of the region and served with copius local wine. It is fair to say that our vegetarian compeers decided to give it a miss, but never mind.
Madame Catherine does prefer it if you can speak some French- which we couldn't- but then we were afterall were in France. Not being a dog person, one of us was very wary of Vitoc, who is some type of massive hound, but he turned out to be a huge draught excluder on legs, and totally harmless.
Zaza the donkey did give us a wake-up call, but when you are in the French countryside, you should expect there to be stock animals. Breakfast was very high quality basic French food; more than enough to sustain us for our continuing journey.
Unfortunately, our stay in Tuscany had to be cut short, but one quick call to Guy and we were able to re-schedule the return trip (all I'm relieved to say, accomplished in English) so the return stop-over was even more of a relief break than it was on the journey down.
Over all, its actually quite a shame we were only looking for an overnight stop. The Chateau and the region has a lot more to offer. It was a treat.
