“You are treated like family”

The sign in the main lodge said "you come as guest and leave as family". Neither my wife and I nor the couple that joined us left feeling like family. There were several things that happened. To be specific on one of them, when my wife did not want to go on a second ride she had signed up for, I asked if I could take her ride. The wrangler told me no that was against the rules.

Room Tip: Close to the pool if you want to use the hot tub in the winter.

“Yee Ha!”

This was the highlight of our American adventure in mid October 2011. We travelled as a family (3 of us one being our 12 year old daughter) and stayed 4 nights. We atmosphere was so relaxed and welcoming. The surroundings were spectacular, and our chalet was clean and comfortable. The food was plentiful and absolutely delicious. And that's just the beginning.

We were firmly there for the horse riding. Two of the three of us had taken riding lessons, only to find that western riding was very different to the English riding we'd learned! Never mind! We wanted to learn their way and the wranglers took this on board and taught us. The horses had wonderful temperaments; they were completely safe and at no point did we ever worry that we were being taken out of our depth. The bottom line is that you as the guest dictate the pace and the wranglers will adjust to your needs and requirements. I cannot speak highly enough of Geoff, Craig and Patrick - they made this trip for us the very special experience that it was.

Because the ranch is so remote, all the guests muck in together and, at least in part, create their own community atmosphere and entertainment. We met some wonderful people - particularly Henry and Gloria and a delightful group of disabled guests. We used the pool and jaccuzzi, played table tennis and pool, played games as a group in the evening, sung together accompanied by Craig's guitar playing. Simple but captivating, totally unique.

We will come back - just try and stop us! Thank you to all at STGR who have a very special place in our hearts, and that includes the horses, especially Chief, Gambler, Cherokee, Scout, Amigo and Ringo

Room Tip: Use the STGR website to get an impression of the rooms, and give them a call to discuss - they will...

“You too can be a dude”

Stayed at STGR for 3 nights in early October with my sister while visiting her in San Francisco on a spur of the moment trip. We had talked about going to a dude ranch in Montana for a while but they all close in September for the weather so we looked at Arizona. STGR was fantastic value for money, the setting is beautiful surrounded by mountains and the way the ranch has been designed and built gives an authentic cowboy feel to the place, each room has a rocking chair and bench on the porch to chill out on. The rooms are clean, comfortable, large and spacious and very disabled friendly. Carrie and her family and friends who were there to help out make you very welcome and look after you. They do make it a 'one big happy family' atmosphere.
You usually ride twice a day and as complete novices we were very wary but the wranglers make it fun, Craig is a walking John Wayne quote book! Carolyn gave us loads of tips to help with our riding and took photographs which she sent to us (thanks again)and we had a go at trotting and would have liked to do more but ran out of time.
The family arrange entertainment in the evenings, you are not obliged to participate. We joined a horseshoe tournament one night and it was fun, we were slaughtered by a couple of 8 year olds! STGR is not licensed but you can take your own booze and they have soft drinks and snacks on sale for minimal cost plus a gift shop.
There is a pool and hot tub with loungers and there are swing seats dotted all around so you can just go and find a little corner to yourself if you wish. I loved the isolation and quiet, it was just so different to the usual holiday, some real downtime and the sunrises and sunsets were spectacular!
Meals are taken in the dining room, all self serve buffet and the family sit down to eat there too. Food was plentiful and varied.
It was a great break, we really enjoyed it and would recommend that you try it as something different.

“Everything you read on here is true.....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2011

Like most people we read all the reviews before booking and we have to say that it was hard to believe that every single review could be right........... they were!! From the moment we arrived we were made to feel like part of the family by Carrie and this seemed to rub off on all the other guests who just got on like we had been friends for life. The setting is gorgeous, the rooms are large and clean, the horse riding was excellent (thanks Steve) and the food just made you go back for more (thanks Tony). To sum up the family we had arrived a little short on gas and before we left Tony helped us with our rental car and gave us enough gas to get to the nearest station (not sure many hotels would offer that service). If you're still not sure whether to go or not then don't hesitate - get it booked and you will not be disappointed.

“A GREAT family vacation... Better than Disney World (from my 8 and 11 year olds)!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

We just returned from an amazing 6 day stay at STGR. The riding, horses, and accommodations were great, but the hospitality of the staff really was above and beyond.

I can't say much that hasn't already been said. We are already looking for an opportunity for a return visit.

My 8 year old and 11 year old were 'loping' on their horses by day 2. The riding only got better from there!

Last year, we made our first and only visit to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando (~2 weeks). It was the best family vacation yet... until now. Our final night at STGR, my 11 year old turned to me and said that this vacation was even better than WDW! My 8 year old agreed!
