There's a lot to be said for staying in a non-chain hotel now in then. In this case though, I wish we'd opted for a chain...
The check-in was awkward, beginning with the front desk guy (owner?) muttering complaints about the online booking service. We were immediately put off by a mildewy smell in the front office, as well as by a sign (all too common in AZ, it seems) stating that that they reserve the right to refuse service at any time, for any reason. The room was aging, cramped and overpriced (though clean enough).
