The village is very small - the hotel is one of the only things going on in the village, other than daily life. Accessible only by boat and on foot from Lake Atitlan, Jaibalito is nestled in a cleft in the side of the mountain off of the lake. When you get to the dock, kids will offer to take your bags for you up the hill. But it's not a very long walk to Vulcano lodge, and it was no trouble at all.
The hotel and its grounds were an oasis. It was like a botanical garden - beautiful plants and flowers everywhere! We ate at the lodge each night we were there - friendly hosts and seriously delicious food - good mojitos too! They helped us plan out what to do each day around the lake, and even set up a few tours for us at other villages by phone.
It was off-season, so it rained off and on. But in our opinion, it was great since we were some of the only people in the place and we had the large suite with the deck and hammocks overlooking the whole lake and the volcanoes. And anyway, the passing rain showers pitter pattering quietly on the bright flowers and greenery around us added to the jungle paradise effect.
We did have a "bat incident" in our room one night. But let's be honest. This is out in the middle of a village in Guatemala, so a stray bat wandering into your room is not really that crazy.
It was all an adventure in a seriously remote location. But the lodge was comfortable, beautiful and relaxing. If you're looking to get "off the map" and "out there"... this is the place!!
