“Simply Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

My friend and I are just finishing our 3-night stay at the Pirate Cove (Feb 2012). It's been a fantastic experience: The food was wonderful, the hotel staff were welcoming, knowledgeable and friendly, and the cabin was clean, well appointed, and, as described -- pretty much on the ocean -- save for a few palms, ferns, and a large tree with lots of iguana.

We chose this hotel as it's associated with Caño Divers; I was looking forward to doing my certification at Isla del Caño, which is a short (30 minute) boat ride away. Not only was the arrangement and payment for the hotel easily performed online, but the diving as well.

Lastly, I mentioned in passing that I happened to be spending my birthday while at the hotel, and the staff was kind enough to prepare a cake, complete with candles, and provide it for dessert that evening.

I would absolutely recommend this hotel and would visit again in a heartbeat.

We where there in dicembre, 3 people, accomodation in a triple room that was not that bad. The major problem was the food. We stay in Pirate cove 2 nights and 3 days, but we eat only vegetables for all the period. The last night we decided to go eating in the closes town, and there we eat a delicious fish!! In the hotel, the personal was nice with us, but the lady that has the place was not much gentle with us. When we got there the personal explain all the activities to a group of 5 people. When it was our turn the lady talks to us 2 minutes and than she left . Was not a good welcome. Every time we ask for something to her the answare was NO or I dont know.
I did diving, it was wonderfull, but since there was not much people doing it, i had to transfer in another hotel to take the boat to dive. The last thing was that when we had to go back to Sierpe, the boat was full of people and we had to do one hour of travel in a very small place. We spend almost 400 dollars but was really not the right price!!!!!!!
I think that next time that I want to stay in drake, I will look for another place!!!!
The natural place

These people said Pirate Cove was too expensive. They booked directly with us and knew in advance the prices and did not make any complaint either before or while staying with us. Each one paid the normal price of $95.00 per night, which included the room, all room taxes, three meals per day and coffee and snacks in the afternoon. One of them chose to go diving, which cost $130.00 and the other two went snorkeling which cost $80.00 per person.

They were not happy with Susan, one of the owners of Pirate Cove, supposedly because she only spent two minutes talking with them and always answered their questions with no or I don't know. Susan always speaks with the guests in the evening and asks them what tours (if any) they would like to go on and she explains what options are available. Sometimes we have many people staying with us and we need to know what they all want to do as our tours are normally organized the night before. In the case of these guests, when they made their reservation, they had already elected to do the diving and snorkel tours so there was nothing much to explain. Susan was not aware that she was unfriendly or unwelcoming to these people.

If the guests said they only ate vegetables while staying with us it was because they chose not to eat meat, which is always available for every meal!

Regarding the diving, it is true that we sent them with another hotel. The reason was because our two large boats had been previously booked with twenty divers and there was no space for them. I'm glad they enjoyed the diving.

Finally, when they left Pirate Cove, they left in one of the taxi boats that the local people operate. I'm afraid those are not within our control.

“All Around Yummy”

My wife and I stayed at the Priate Cove in mind December 2011 and absolutely loved it. We took the honey moon deal, which meant full board for 5 days and four nights, as well as four activities organized through the hotel. The food was superb - we did not have the same dish twice, neither for lunch nor dinner. Unlike the typical rice and beans themed dishes in most of Costa Rica the cuisine was surprisingly diverse and tasted very good.

The hotel also functions as an activites hub - from night walks which take place nightly on demand, through horse back riding and scuba diving and snorkeling (yes, the hotel has its own scuba instructor). It was hard to pick only four activities! And each was better than the next.

The staff at the hotel are sweet and extremely helpful. Susanna and Nelson - you are the best. Here's an example - we were meant to fly out from an airport located far from the hotel but prefered to change the flight to the closer airport. Nelson got on his cell phone (3 hours before the flight!) and managed to switch it for us. They trully go the extra mile.

Room tip - they are all very comfy, BUT here's the major difference - new rooms, apart from simply being newer have air conditioners; the other rooms are more spacious (they are cabinds), they do not have a/c but they DO have a balcony and hamock.

Bottom line - best hotel we stayed at in Costa Rica. Highly recommended.

This is our 7th trip to Costa Rica. We have stayed at well over a dozen hotels. This was far and away the worst.

The room had beds although it was nust myself and my wife. Zero amenities-- no coffee maker; walls so hin that the neighbouring cabin said they could see shadows through the wall; no sheets on the bed; no a/c.

Meals were included but virtually inedible. If you could eat them, there was not enough so several guests including us biked 30 mi.utez fo town each afternoon to get food. Even the water is not potable yet the hotel chargez for bottled water. Meals are at 7;1230 and 6. No exceptions. There are no snacks even if you wished to purchase them

The staff are simply there to sell you eco-tours. We booked a tour to primary rainforest. We left the hotel an bour plus late because of the guide. There wS no make up time. That turned out to be ok because we ended up taki.g a bout for 90 minutes one way--- not to primary rainforest but to what the guide admittex was an abandoned farm going semi wild. All that frustration cost 200 dollars.

We have previously been to eco- lodges in Corcovado anx were thrilled. That is why we returned. Unfortunately this hotel uses the eco- tourism labrl to attract guests but in reality it is nothing but a shabby run down hotel with zero service or appeal.

Never ever again

What a shame the couple never made a single criticism while they stayed with us, as we had no idea they were so unhappy. In any case, a number of their comments just don't correspond with reality at Pirate Cove.

They said the room had beds but no sheets, which is hard to believe since they remained with us for three nights and never said anything. They specifically asked for a large cabin, which we normally reserve for larger families since the room has one double and three single beds. The double and one single bed were fully made up and changed each day. The other beds were only covered by the top cover, which is normal practice for us to avoid humidity, which can be a problem in the rain forest.

I'm not sure what they mean when they say we have "zero amenities." We do not have a coffee maker in the room since coffee and tea is always available in the dining room. The cabin walls are definitely not thin and are in fact made of concrete block covered with plaster so I don't see how anybody could see shadows through concrete! We have never offered air conditioning in Pirate Cove for either bungalows or cabins nor have we ever advertised having it, so I don't know why this couple seemed to think it should have been available.

Of course I respect their negative opinion of our food even though they made no comments about it during their stay, nor did they ever complain about not getting enough to eat. They say they biked to town each afternoon to buy food. That is strange on two counts. First of all, every afternoon we offer complimentary coffee, tea and fresh baked cookies or other snacks. Second of all, there are no bicycles available at Pirate Cove so I'm not sure where they found the bicycles as there are no bicycle rental shops in Drake Bay. They are correct in that we do not sell snacks since we give them out for free.

Regarding water, all our rooms have signs that say you shouldn't drink the water since it comes directly from mountain streams and is not treated by government approved water plants. The government forces us to put those signs in each bathroom. However, all water used for drinking and cooking, and all drinking water in the pitchers in every room are filtered by osmosis equipment owned by Pirate Cove. We never charge for this water and it is probably safer than the water you get from your faucet at home. Occasionally we do have guests who ask specially for bottled water and that we do charge for, just as we charge for soft drinks and beer and wine.

The strangest criticism they made is that they booked a tour to a primary rainforest and instead we sent them to an abandoned farm. In fact, they specifically booked a tour to Sirena (the best place to see wildlife) at Corcovado National Park and that is exactly where we sent them. The cost for that tour is not $200.00 but $95.00. Their tour left a few minutes late (not an hour as they state) because we were waiting for other tourists and not because our guide arrived late. The actual tour lasted just as long as all others have done. The lovely boat ride to Sirena which precedes the tour, is a huge favorite with nearly all tourists since they often see dolphins and whales. This part of the trip takes about 35-40 minutes and not 90 minutes as they allege.

Last of all, the statement that our staff are only there to sell eco-tours is simply not true. Our reputation (gained over the last ten years) is that we never pressure anyone to do any tour or other activity that he or she doesn't want to do. That is perhaps why we offer all our guests the free use of kayaks during their stay and that is why we have hammocks outside each room for those who want to just relax and do nothing while enjoying their stay with us in paradise.
