“Impressive hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

My company held a sales conference here in January. It was a super place for such a conference, although I question whether I'd like to stay here on a personal visit, if there are conferences being held at the same location. We really overran the place, with events outside on the patio, etc.
However, the facility is outstanding. Beautiful decor, comfortable rooms, and lovely indoor and outdoor spaces.
Because we ate all our meals together as a conference, with banquet food, it is possible that our food experiences were perhaps lower than their usual service because of the sheer hundreds of us needing to be fed together! Certainly, the creativity of the menus was commendable, but the execution was a bit spotty. Overall, good, not excellent. Because I did not eat at the regular restaurants, I can't comment on that food service.
I recommend this hotel for conferences, however. They did an excellent job, with much better food than most conference hotels, and the location was one of the most scenic.
Rooms -- this is a biggie for me, as a good rest is essential. Some of my colleagues complained about hard beds. I found mine to be firm, but very comfortable. My room overlooked the golf course, and it was lovely to hear the evening bagpipes every day. My internet access was very poor in my corner room, however. A definite drawback, as I was there on business. Also, a very big negative was the fact that there is only one bank of elevators and the rooms are on looooong hallways that are extremely inconvenient, especially if you have any issues with walking long distances. I must have booked miles and miles going back and forth in these hallways.
While I look forward to exploring Scottsdale on a personal, not business, trip, I don't know if I'd stay here again. Certainly, if you are a golfer, you will want to do so, but I know that I would not want to stay at a conference hotel for pleasure.
I have an issue with the business office. I needed to make some copies for a presentation I was giving at our conference. It was outrageously expensive to print anything, even in black and white! Shocking, really.
Overall, a gorgeous place with beautiful indoor and outdoor settings. Service is impeccable, too. It was a pleasure to be in this facility for business!

Room Tip: If you have any issues with walking long distances, ask for a room near the elevator! The hallways...

“They have stepped up their game”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

We stayed at the Westin Kierland for a golf tournament. It is the busy time for the hotel and the city, so there is an understanding of service not being up to grade. We were not overly impressed with the hotel during our last stay 2 years ago. I can't stand apathy and it seemed that the hotel and staff got tired and apathetic. The other side of apathy is genuine interest (even if it is feigned). The staff seemed to show more interest and smiling faces, even the breakfast in the hotel was good, fruit was fresh, OJ fresh. The oatmeal was even good. They were actually concerned when I pointed out a nail in one of the chairs coming through. There was a feeling (the cynic in me) that the concierges are paid and encouraged to promote the local fare. We like to challenge concierges with "what about a moderately priced restaurant that would pleasantly surprise people.". It took them a while to figure one out, but it was great, in a different part of town. I went for a run, stopped at the front and a smiling face offered me water right away. I have run before there and there was no reaction to my run. The housekeeper was great and made sure we were fine. A great sign is when all staff have buy in to the culture. Hotel was a little pricey and one should expect this kind of service and culture. Scottsdale has a lot to choose from in elegance, so it was good to see that the Kierkand tried to step it's game up. Oh yeah , the bed was rock hard, but I can sleep on a bed of nails. Oh yeah II, my wife went to the spa nd the same lady who did her pedicure 2 years ago recognized her... Good touch.

Room Tip: Sign up for Starwood points. I don't travel that much, but it probably helps.

“Great Fun for Football Weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

My son and I traveled to the Phoenix area to watch the Fiesta Bowl, which was played on January 2, 2012. We booked our travel through the official package offered by the Stanford Athletic Department's travel agent, Anthony Travel. We had a terrific time, and were so happy with Anthony Travel's choice of the Westin Kierland. The staff at the hotel was super, super friendly and helpful, and even joined in the fun of the football weekend by donning Stanford t-shirts, as the hotel was primarily filled with Stanford fans.

Our room was spotlessly clean and spacious, and we had a terrific view of the golf course. We were in and out at various times during the day, and the housekeeping staff must have been just waiting to pounce on our room because they would make it up during very short time periods when we were out.

We enjoyed the little recreation area, shooting some hoops and playing ping pong, as well as going for a couple of runs in the area.

When we left (at 5AM!), the staff was totally on top of things, getting our airport transportation in a matter of seconds.

We would definitely come back here to stay for any reason!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the golf course - we didn't ask, but ended up there anyway.

“Nice resort, clean and spacious rooms”

Friendly staff, spacious resort with golf course at the hotel. A couple of bars, a few restaurants and a Spa. The massage in the Spa for 50 min. was a bit overprized for $178,-.

Rooms are spacious, clean and quiet.

Room Tip: See if you can get a room which is not looking out on the main entrance of the hotel, but more to th...

“Fine stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I stayed here while attending a conference. The resort is half an hour from the airport and is one of the nicer resorts I've stayed at for work. Check in and out were easy. Reception didn't know about my meeting room key, but the staff figured it out in a few minutes. The room was clean and the bed was quite comfortable. There is a big outdoor patio on the main floor. A few of my staff enjoyed the golf course too. There is a small FedEx Office near the reception desk that I used to print my boarding pass. The hotel is across the street from Kierland Commons--shopping and restaurants. My highlight was Mastro's Ocean Club restaurant where there was live music.

I had a few issues though. I had trouble connecting to WIFI. I followed the instructions to connect but I kept getting an error message so I connected by Ethernet. The other issue is phone reception, or lack there of, in the ballroom where our conference was held.
