“Nice stay”

We had an enjoyable stay in the Pinetop area, including our seven nights the PVC at the Roundhouse Resort. Like another reviewer mentioned, the PVC at the Roundhouse Resort is not he 'Roundhouse Resort'. The Roundhouse Resort is an older property of hotel type rooms. The PVC at the Roundhouse Resort is a timeshare type property with individual cabins.

The 'cabins' are really manufactured homes with log siding. The cabins are very nice, large and clean. Well equipped in all aspects with one big exception - no air conditioning. Even at 7000 feet, Pinetop still gets warm, or some might say hot. No A/C would probably keep us from returning. With kids who need to take midday naps, it's tough inside a stuffy cabin. If the cabin had air conditioning I would be happy to rate the cabin as an A. Without A/C, definitly a lower rating.

Don't expect your 'cabin' to be in a nature setting. Think more or an RV park type personal space setting. The 'cabins' are close to each other and there is a busy road near the property. Our 'cabin' was one of the furthest from the road, and we could hear road noise throughout the night through our open windows (no A/C). There is a fire station accross from the property. There were a number of cabins that directly backed the road. I definitly would not want to stay in any of those.

The reality of a stay in Pinetop is that you get to explore the amazing forests. The PVC is a great launching point for this. With small children, we wanted to find a river to let the kids wade in. We found river wading nirvana about 20 minutes from the PVC.

The north fork of the White river on the Apache reservation was picture postcard perfect. Unspoiled, easy access, beautful clear and cool - a perfect escape!

We also vistied Greer - never pass up a steak at Molly Butler lodge and visited Hawley Lake - almost as big as Big Lake, and a much prettier setting. The nine mile drive on SR 473 is pretty in itself. Hawley lake at 8300 feet was very pretty. It was too bad that the boat dock workers didn't show up the day we were there, as we wnated to rent a boat and take it out on the lake.

If the cabins had A/C, more space and trees between you and your neigbors and there was no road noise this would be a perfect vacation spot. Even with these issues, we had an enjoyable time at the PVS at the Roundhouse Resort.

One last item - the staff was very helpful and friendly.

“Great!”

We just came back from a week at PVC at Roundhouse Resorts and had a great time in a wonderful "cabin" (more of a house, actually).

First, to clear up some confusion which I think may have affected at least one of the other posted reviews - "PVC at the Roundhouse" is a *completely* different facility from "The Roundhouse Resort".

Both share an entrance driveway (but *not* a common check-in office), and people staying at PVC have guest privileges at the Roundhouse Resort's sports facility (pool, hot tub, racquetball courts, basketball, billiards, and ping-pong). "PVC" refers *specifically* to the log-sided cabins that you pass on the way into the Roundhouse Resort. Except for the contract that allows PVC guests to use Roundhouse's sports facility, there is no connection between the two organizations. It's unfortunate that PVC chose to include "Roundhouse" in its name; I think that leads to some of the confusion.

Anyway, we were warmly greeted upon check-in. I was offered soft drinks and made to feel very welcome while we did the very minimal paperwork. We were given a packet of information on local attractions / restaurants, loaned an ethernet cable, then walked over to our cabin.

The cabin to which we had been assigned had 3 small stairs up to the front door, but my parents, ages 90 and 87, were with us, and as soon as the hostess noticed they were struggling to get up the stairs, she immediately switched us to a cabin with a ramp for access instead. I expect this involved some juggling of reservations, as it took a little while for her to process the change, but this service was exemplary, given that I hadn't mentioned any mobility problems when I made the reservation.

Our cabin (#15) had a full electric kitchen including full-size refrigerator / freezer, dishwasher, garbage disposal, double sink with sprayer, microwave, and range / oven. It was well-equipped with dishes, pots and pans, and silverware, There was a full small container of Cascade, and a full container of dish detergent for washing items by hand if needed. There was a large coffee-maker with filters, bottle and can opener, corkscrew, cutting boards, etc. The only thing we missed was a cookie sheet, which was happily provided by the office immediately upon asking. There is a cordless phone in the kitchen.

There is a separate dining area with a large square table and plenty of chairs (8? - not sure).

The living room has a 3-seat sofa, ceiling fan, an armchair, a rocker, a TV with cable, a DVD player, and an electric faux fireplace, as well as side tables and a coffee table. Decor is southwestern throughout, nicely done with trim and paintings.

The master bedroom has a king-size bed, ceiling fan, a side entrance from the outside, a TV, a corded phone, a bathroom with large bath with jacuzzi and a walk-in shower, a large mirrored closet, and high-speed internet access (wired).

The second bedrrom had two queen-sized beds and a large mirrored closet. It also has a ceiling fan. The second bathroom has a full tub / shower.

Housekeeping was courteous and efficient. We were provided with daily trash pickup and towel service, and we were offered a sheet change after three nights, because we were staying there as a timeshare exchange. If you are paying a rack rate, you will be offered full housekeeping service every day.

We had a small problem with the hot water (circuit breaker kept tripping), but they reset it a couple of times for us, then, once they determined more extensive repair was needed, they took the hot water down for a couple of hours while they replaced the thermonstat - problem solved!

We also had trouble with the dryer (clothes still very wet, although hot, after two hours in the dryer). They came over and cleaned the vent - not sure if it solved the problem or not, as we didn't do another load after that. It may have actually been the washer's fault for not spinning them out enough.

There is an 18-hole free miniature golf course on site which my son and I played a couple of times. It is fun and surprisingly challenging. No windmills, loop-the-loops, etc., just greens with hills, obstacles, and a water hazard.

All in all, a very enjoyable visit, which I'd happily repeat and heartily recommend to others!

“So-so experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2006

We just finished spending nearly a week at the Roundhouse Resort. We were assigned a two-bedroom log cabin that sleeps up to eight people. It had a fairly well-equipped kitchen, two bathrooms, a small porch, and outdoor parking for two vehicles.

A big negative for us was the overall sense that the management didn't trust their guests. We had to give them a credit card upon check in, and they put a "temporary hold" of $200 on it!!!! In our ten years of using timeshare properties, we have NEVER had to do anything like that. Looking at the few guests that were there, they were mostly older, upper-income, and hardly the type to take off with a toaster.

The "resort" shares a large indoor swimming pool with another property. The pool building also contains a basketball court, a racquetball court, and pool and ping-pong tables. We enjoyed the pool but were taken aback when we were told we needed to leave a $75 security deposit via a credit card!!! I had to leave my driver's license as well. There was even a security camera on the hot tub!!

The cabin was comfortable but we had to leave doors and windows open in order to cool it down. There is what appears to be an air-conditioning thermostat in the hall, but it is actually just a fan to circulate the air. Because the doors and windows are all at ground level, we didn't feel comfortable leaving them open during the night. The "fireplace" is actually more of a lamp in the shape of a small fireplace mounted on the wall.

Our kids loved the cool weather and miniature golf course on the property, but we were told at one point that they couldn't play outside, "because they were getting in the road." The "road" was actually the driveway leading to some of the cabins and scarcely used during the day. Our kids are 4 and 7, and we would never expect or want them to spend their vacation days indoors watching TV.

We highly recommend visiting the Williams Creek Fish Hatchery, the Painted Desert, the Petrified Forest, and hiking the trail at Woodland Lake Park.

The Pinetop-Lakeside area is beautiful, and we visit it every year, but we would not return to the Roundhouse Resort.

  • Liked — Rooms were large.
  • Disliked — In the evenings the cabin was stuffy and hard to cool down.
