“Hotel San Carlos - Interesting and Affordable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We chose Hotel San Carlos after checking Tripadvisor because it's within easy walking distance of Symphany Hall and costs about half what the chain area hotels cost. We only needed 1 night before moving on elsewhere. This is a good, affordable, safe choice - but know what you're getting. San Carlos is intentionally a 1940's style hotel. The rooms are small - the bathroom is tiny - but we've stayed in upscale hotels in Paris and London with less room. They've left some of the old features, some operational, some not. Yes, the tile and brass shows its age - but it's real tile and brass. The bedding is new, spotless, and comfortable. We were very worried about room temperature because the window didn't open and the AC is not controlled in the room. There's a ceiling fan. We like it cool at night. We had the best night's sleep of the trip. Staff were helpful and overall nice. The location is perfect...and so was the price. Oh - and the Metro from the airport stops half a block from the hotel.

“Historic Hotel”

We stayed here for 2 nights in Jan. while on vacation and were quite pleased overall. Don't be afraid of the negative reviews here; just read up and know what you're getting into. This is a great historic hotel with a wonderful history and a definite charm, but it is not fully renovated and has quirks unique to older buildings. The bathrooms ARE tiny (NYC-sized), and the walls ARE thin. (Earplugs took care of this problem.) We didn't have the hot water problems others did, thank goodness. POSITIVES: We enjoyed the overall ambiance, found the front desk folks to be friendly, and we really appreciated the guided tour of the hotel that Tina cheerfully gave us, explaining all the wonderful history and movie star visits and the alleged ghosts. We wouldn't have wanted to spend a whole week here, since it's not a luxury hotel, but the 2 nights here gave us what we knew we were going to get, and we came away quite happy.

“Central Location But Low Value”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

We were in town for the Arizona R&R Marathon. This hotel is centrally located in downtown and the price was decent. And, this attracted some rude customers. There were two disturbances outside our room in the wee hours of the morning and I felt unsafe. Security arrived after the muckrakers left. Not good right before a 26.2 run. The room was small but the bathroom was clean and functional. The Wi-Fi and TV worked adequately. However, everything was just crammed in - desk, chair, TV chest, etc. Beer or something was spilled in the elevator (wood flooring) and it was not cleaned in a timely manner. The staff was friendly enough but the desk folks did not seemed too concerned for the customers experience. The parking situation was "as advertised" but made the overall value drop even lower. Fortunately, Saturday night after 8pm is free downtown street parking. We were able to park 100 yards away. The property is adjacent to a pub with outdoor seating and it also has street seating. The funny thing is that in the evening, the customer has to walk through smoke to get to the non-smoking premises. I will not be staying there again.

“Worst Hotel EVER”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

I had no hot water, the t.v. was broken, it smelled, we could hear the people next door (thin walls), it was sketchy at night, the exercise equipment was also broken, and worst of all the staff was so rude. This hotel charged me for a night's stay that i wasn't there for, and then couldn't reverse the charges and gave me some weird line about not believing me. The manager, Angela Hentz, said i was mean. I had to dispute it through my credit card company. DO NOT STAY HERE!

Room Tip: Stay instead at the new Westin down the street, the staff was so helpful and nice

“Historic (Old) Hotel in Downtown”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

The service at this hotel is mediocre. The staff often seemed tired and uninterested. There also isn't much of a concierge.

The room (single queen) was an okay size. The room I stayed in was clean and had an eclectic mix of antique and refurbished furniture. The bathroom was not huge but served its purpose. There was a good size closet in the room, a large window, as well as a sitting area for two and a desk which were all in good condition. I liked that they provided hot chocolate as well as tea and coffee.

The walls certainly are thin but I didn't find this hotel noisy at night. Also, the carpets in the hallway were very old and the hotel could use some upgrades to make it feel more inviting and...clean.

The internet connection is shaky and the computers in the "business room" (for which you have to leave your ID at front desk to get a key to) are old and the printer was also out of service.

The hotel is located within walking distance to many restaurants and 'attractions' in downtown Phoenix, including the convention center.

I would recommend this hotel for business travelers that are interested in experiencing a historic hotel and want to be within walking distance to several amenities.
