I read the previous review, because we must have been there around the same time. I was there mid January and it had just been taken over by a new owner. However unlike the previous reviewer - I had a fantastic time!
We had a lovely comfortable fale on the beach - complete with fly screens (i.e no mosquitos!), ceiling fan, lovely deck and chairs, small fridge, and of course the beautiful outdoor bathroom. Showering outside, hidden behind a screen wall of exotic stones, red hibiscus, looking up at the coconut trees, is a refreshing experience!
By day we snorkelled in the amazing coral reef, and explored the giant pools within the lava teeming with sea life. When hungry we would emerge from the ocean and lie in one of the many hammocks or deck chairs throughout the beach. We would order lunch, and it would be delievered to where ever we were sitting. I recommend trying the fish burger - a huge chunk of fresh tuna steak - the most delicious I have ever had!
By mid afternoon, we would grab the kayaks, and go for a paddle along the coast, seeing more amazing secluded beaches and bays. If you are more of daredevil, surfing the waves at the edge of the reef may appeal to you!
On saturday night we had Fia fia night - which started with a traditional kava ceremony. Afterwards we had a delicious meal of locally cooked umu - and tasted all the delights of traditional samoan food. Then they put on a fabulous evening of cultural dances, making coconut cream, singing and music. While being offered free shots by the owner!
On sunday night was Australian barbeque night - which was just as yummy, especially the bbq fish!
There are tours available daily from the resort, kayaks and pool room/bar. Cocktails at happy hour was great - nothing like sipping a cocktail while sitting under a coconut tree watching the sunset! There is also a saltwater pool overlooking the sea - great for the kids!
I can't find any fault with our stay here - except that next time, I would take my own water and juice, so I didn't have to keep interupting my snorkel time to go down to the restaurant to get a glass of water! (It was free!).
Thank you to the wonderful hardworking staff that were fantastic!
Tip - Sa'moana is on the the South coast - aproximately a 45minute drive from Apia. Hire a car from town and grab a free map from the Tourism desk at the airport when you come out of customs! Or from the visitors centre in town.
Room Tip: Our room was 'Hibiscus 2' and it was lovely.
