Kau Kalenshen is a small, friendly hosteria set just behind the main street of El Calafate. A great location for the restaurants and shops and an easy walk to the bus station - if you don't have all your luggage with you at the time, as there are a few steps involved. We stayed for 2 nights, then did a side tour to El Chalten before returning for a final night and the hotel looked after our main bags and did a very good value service wash while we were away. The staff are all friendly and helpful and at least one speaks excellent English - always a help when your own language skills are woefully lacking! He also seemed to know our schedule for the next day, who would be picking us up when and asking if we needed a wake up call. We stayed in two different rooms, the first (no11) was next to the sitting room in the main building and very big, probably a family room - great for 2 people with big bags to sort out. The second (no 5) was a chalet in the garden - not quite so big, but more than adequate space. The pretty garden is a big plus here. Breakfast was a reasonable continental buffet but the restaurant comes into its own in the evening when it offers excellent and good value vegetarian meals. Arrving late one night we had the best pizza in Argentina - we were warned that it would be big for 2, and it was, but we made serious in roads into it as it was so delicious. The only minor downside for this hotel was the lack of sound insulation in the rooms - but as we had to get up early every day, we were probably the ones doing the disturbing.
