“Met all my expectations but the breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 February 2011

Hosteria Meulen is just the same as on the pictures, antique furniture, close to Argentino lake and very classy decorated. But it is not by the lake, almost 800 m far from it and there are a couple of hotels in the same area which are much more closer even by the lake.

I am passionate with historical styled places and that place stimulated me very much. As soon as you step in the hotel, it is very warm it is impossible to get cold even in the bathroom, heating is great.

They gave us a room without lakeview but it didnt bother us, sleeping quality and room space was very good. Bathroom was small but very clean, decoration of the room was perfect with the antique looking furniture.

You can walk to Argentino lake which take 5-6 minutes, walking city centre is 15-20 minutes. If you want, there is a free shuttle service of hotel, which we used almost every night to return back from city centre.

El Calafate was breathtaking with perito moreno glacier trekking and zipline excursion. Also the restaurants, patagonian type lamb and wine was just perfect.

We didn't eat in the restaurant because of the breakfast. It is the only thing i didnt like about Meulen, breakfast was poor and definetly not tasty. I asked for fresh croissant because they serve it cold and almost stale. In return, the waitress brought me heated 3 croissant but one of them was burned, so i gave them to the cute, fat, black dog which is just outside of the hotel everyday. We stayed 4 nights there and breakfast was the same.

If they gave a richer range of breakfast and fresh croissant it would make more pleased guests and maybe more guests for their restaurant because we didnt even think about eating dinner there after the horrible breakfast experience.

I would stay somewhere else, a closer hotel to the lake or a hotel in the centre if i go back to El Calafate, but if you dont care about the breakfast and like the other facilities of the hotel it would be good choice.

“Very very good: deserves a place in the top 5 of El Calafate”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2010

We stayed in this hotel for 6 nights in november and loved it! It's not a very big hotel and that's what we like.
Yes, you do need to follow a gravelroad and it's a bit further from the center of El Calafate, but taxis are cheap (and 5-10 min. max.) and walking is only about 20 minutes.
We did't have dinner in the hotel, but is does provide it. The breakfast was okay, nothing special but enough as it is in almost everywhere we've stayed in Argentina.
The hotel is decorated with old antique furniture and we liked that very much. The hotel has a very good feel.
The rooms were absolutely great: we had a double with lakeview. It was very big and very clean. Enough space to put your belongings. The bed was also very big and slept great. The bathroom was a bit smal, but very clean, No sticky showercurtain here, but a sliding glass door. The light in the shower itself was a bit dark. In the rest of the bathroom it was fine.
The only 2 cons of the room were the showerlight and also the heating. The heating is arranged centrally, so you can not put the heating in your room down or up if you wish. The first 2 nights the room was quit warm and we only had 2 small windows we could open and this wasn't enough to drop the temperature a bit and make it more pleasant. The other 4 nights the heating was just fine.`
We heard some noises from other guests, but it wasn't very loud or annoying.
We also absolutely loved the dog Negrita who came running everytime we called her and lay down on her back to let you pet her belly.
The service in the hotel was great: the owner as well as the 3 female staffmembers (Magdalena, Natalie and ?) were very friendly and helpfull, They booked us every tour and restaurant we wanted and didn't have to arrange anything ourselves.
This hotel absolutely deservers a much higher place on Tripadvisor than where it's at right now!

“by the lake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 March 2010

this small hotel is outside of the city, by the Argentino lake, where you can see, from time to time, some small glaciers floating until they melt completely. The hotel is cute, clean and the personnel is very friendly and helping. The breakfast is not very rich, but I noted it's the same everywhere in Argentina. They arrange a shuttle to take you to the center, but you could also go by taxi, is not very expensive. They also bring you back in the evening.

“Hotel is OK, but location is too isolated and restaurant was fawlty towers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2009

The room and the hotel are ok for me, but there are 2 rather bad things I would like to mention.
First : the location is at least 20 minutes on foot out of town and only accessible through a dirt road. It overlooks the argentino-lake and the lagune with flamingo's.
Second : I tried eating in the restaurant one evening. After ordering one of the menu's, I had to wait more than 1 hour to get the soup. The main course I ordered was brought after more than 2 hours of waiting and it was lamb instead of chikken. The waitress kept on arguing she was right and I was wrong, So I left the restaurant without further delay.

Personally, I would suggest staying in town and hire a taxi to see the flamingo's in the lagune.
