Why did we find La Candela unique? It is a modest unpretentious hotel, the rooms though clean, comfortable and thoughtfully equipped are not too large, and there is no real kitchen so that breakfast apart, there is virtually no provision for food in the hotel. Yet the Candela has the unique quality of making you feel immediately that you are in your own home. And this happens from the moment you step in to the hotel lobby for check-in.
After checking in and at the end of a long and tiring journey we sat in the hotel's lovely rear verandah looking out onto a very pretty garden and a small pool and felt an absolute peace dropping over us. Since we were a little hungry they made us some hot toasted sandwiches and large delicious coffees, and we felt it was a truly restful quiet moment in what turned out to be a strenuous if spectacular journey of 2 weeks. Though the hotel has no catering arrangements, their ever smiling staff will make up a nice toasted sandwich for you at any time of the day, and should you wish to eat in, they will have dinner brought in from a neighboring restaurant and serve it to you in the breakfast room or patio as you prefer. There is also a bar, serving wine and soft drinks which can be enjoyed in their cozy lounge.
The house - and it is essentially an extended family house - is very well maintained, with quiet and authentic decor in an architecturally true regional building, and there is an air about it of understated elegance. The smiling staff, always the same familiar faces, whether at the reception or at the breakfast table are always kind, willing and eager to help. Its like being in a family.
The service at the reception is quiet, attentive and always with a smile, and if you have problems as we did, even with travel arrangements, they are very sincerely there for you. We would confidently go out leaving matters in their hands and come back to find our transport and onward hotel accommodation arranged. Clear of worries and in the certain belief that if there was a problem Inez or Florencia would be there with a solution was enormous reassurance for a couple who tend to get muddled up as we do with currencies and travel arrangements,
The hotel is extremely well located, a 10 minute walk from the central square, with its shops and banks, and just a hop away from the main attractions. If we were tired there was an excellent, reasonably priced restaurant just next door. The rooms in the hotel are without fuss and trimmings, but they are functional, friendly and warm, the furniture is period and polished, I was charmed by the old fashioned safe with a heavy old fashioned key, and essential items like a comfortable bed, desk, luggage rack, large wardrobe, hairdryer, large comfortable seating which could at a stretch be a third bed, and a comprehensive information list on the wall are there. The bathroom is small but functional with an excellent shower and a fine selection of toiletries.
The public part of the hotel is extremely charming, a comfortable spontaneous beauty that needs no extras and the deeper one goes into the house, the better it gets. La Candela is a place one does not forget easily, in the same way one doesn't forget good friends!!
Room Tip: A premium double is good value. Rooms are quiet. Though the view from our room was not as good as I...
