I spent almost a week in this hotel in late January 2011, and found it to be perfect for the international traveler who wants to stay in a safe, clean and modern hotel that's centrally located and within walking distance from everywhere in downtown Mendoza, without breaking the bank. I apologize for writing this review so long after my trip, but I am going to Mendoza again in January 2012, and I decided I needed to write a review for the hotel after reading the existing reviews for this hotel and feeling as though they didn't accurately portray my experience.
I actually flew into Mendoza in late December 2010, and stayed in a different hotel for two nights that had been chosen by the group I was traveling with. That hotel was only a block away from the Internacional Hotel. After a day and a half of walking around Mendoza, I'd seen enough of the "3-star" hotels to know that (a) the hotel I was then staying in wasn't great, and (b) the Internacional Hotel looked the best of any of the surrounding hotels that were in the "3-star"/$50-65 (U.S.$) per night range. At the tail end of our trip, when we returned to Mendoza in January 2011, I chose to stay instead at the Internacional Hotel, and I'm so glad I did, for the following reasons:
1) Rooms - The rooms are small, it's true. My room had room for one double-sized bed, two bed-side tables, a TV on the wall, and a folding luggage rack. The bathroom was similarly small, with a shower stall, a toilet, and a small corner sink crammed into a room about 5 feet by 5 feet wide. However, the room was clean and neat, the sheets were crisp and clean, and everything worked (including the air conditioning, which was controllable, and could get as cold as I wanted it to).
2) Common Areas - The common areas had obviously been recently renovated. There was a great "living room" area with modern couches, a huge flat-screen TV on the wall (which was available for guest use), lots of brochures for local activities, and a coffee table with lots of books on local areas, subjects of varying interest, etc. Adjacent to the "living room" area was a smaller nook with two computers set up for guest use, with free internet connections. I brought my laptop computer and was able to get a good wifi internet connection (also free) throughout the hotel.
3) Breakfast - The free breakfast that is included with each night's stay was delicious. In addition to the sort of cold, "continental" breakfast items I expect at most hotels in the U.S. (cold croissants, muffins, cereal, etc.), the hotel also put out hard-boiled eggs, different kinds of fresh fruit, and other items that made it possible to get a healthy breakfast without stuffing yourself with carbohydrates. Also, it seemed as though the breakfast items were replenished throughout the breakfast meal period, so that it wasn't necessary to rush down right when the breakfast area opened to ensure that you'd get the "best pick." (I appreciated this on mornings when I stumbled down to the breakfast area five minutes before the meal period closed, after being out until 4am the night before!)
4) Service - Everyone was kind and helpful. If you don't speak Spanish fluently, it may be more difficult for you to communicate with the front desk attendants, but in my experience, they did their best to be patient and try to understand me when their English failed them. Because it seemed to me that most of the hotel's guests were fluent Spanish speakers (read: this place was not swamped with U.S. and European travelers), I can't blame them for not speaking English fluently. The housekeepers were friendly and thorough (and honest, in my case, since I left money out on the bedside tables almost every day while I was out).
5) Pool - Yes, there is a pool. Unlike other hotels in the area, though, their pool isn't attached to the hotel. I had to get directions (it's a block away), and even then, it was a little tough to find. It hadn't been renovated recently, but it was a tucked away little oasis that I loved. The fact that it isn't part of the hotel building, and that I had to seek it out, meant that I had it to myself. That was pretty cool!
On that return trip, I visited friends that were staying in other hotels, and I did "upgrade" to the Park Hyatt on the last night of my trip, just to "reacclimate," if you will. I think that for the price, this hotel was a great deal, and I'm looking forward to staying there again in January 2012!
