“Bang for your buck!”

We booked a private twin room on hostels.com for US$12 each and were amazed with what we got for our money. Aircon, cable tv, comfy beds and a decent sized room! The room was on the ground floor sharing a separate area of the hostel with only one other room, so the shared bathroom was free most of the time. However being on the ground floor the room's window faced the street, which was noisy sometimes (luckily we had earplugs), and we couldn't really open the window as everyone walking past could see in. Staff were great and very friendly and helpful. Location pretty good, few mins walk to the main street and about 10/15 mins walk to main square. They have a promotion if you stay more than 3 nights you get a free days bike hire in the wine area which was great, saved us 30p each. Best value option in town!

“An all round, great, homely place to stay.”

Javier and staff were more than hospitable, and have managed to do a very rare thing, create a hostel which is like home from home. Aalthough, bring earplugs, as the front rooms can be quite noisy from the traffic.
The personal service, the large, comfy beds, hot showers, heating, great kitchen , cable tv, cleanliness etc, made us stay 4 days longer than anticipated.
Although we did organised our own tours, the feedback from other guests, in regards to the winery visits, were extremely positive, and great value.
The staff cater to your every need, and they even have their own red wine for sale.

I would definitely stay there again, and could not recommend enough.

“Excellent value and friendly staff”

The hostel was close to the bus station and minutes to downtown by foot. I was greeted by a man who I presume is the owner, and his adorable infant daughter when checking in. Rooms were tidy and thankfully had air conditioning as it hit 30 degrees when I was there and during the night, was painfully hot.

The staff were so helpful in booking tours for the wineries, providing maps and pointing out their recommended restaurants, places of interest and souvenir stores. There's only one free computer though and even though the hostel wasn't busy there was always a line, and I wound up letting people use my netbook since there's free wi-fi. Decent kitchen an breakfast and small patio area to hang out in. Street is quiet and it's not party hostel, though it is a good place to meet fellow backpackers. Would stay there again.

“let me down”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2010

I booked Lagares on the recommendations of friends. Travelling solo, it was important that i book with a safe hostel and one where i could make acquaintances within a 2 day window. Despite extensive correspondence and the hostel's refusal to take a deposit (my word was enough apparently) the hostel informed me by email in the early morning of by check in.

I arrived to the hostel and found they had emailed me at 2am to tell me there was a problem with the water pipes and they were upgrading me to their apartment. It was completely inappropriate for a solo female traveller and it made me feel unsafe. I returned from checking it out and could not be offered a resolution. I cannot be sure that the excuse about the pipe was genuine but it did not appear to be affecting the other residents. My belief i was shunted to accomodate a longer booking.

I felt very let down and only that a passing hostel owner offered me a room i would have had to start from scratch with only already wasted and limited time in a city. Unfortunately it marred my opinion of mendoza.
