Rick's Place is unique. It's not a boutique hotel, and it's certainly not a B&B but it has some characteristics of both - the very best characteristics. Imagine an upper-class English country house party of the 1920's, then relocate it to the middle of the most exciting city in the world. Join in the fun, or keep to yourself - your preferences will be respected.
Then imagine a host who is not in it for the money, but because he genuinely enjoys people. Behave towards him with a minimum level of respect and politeness and you will enjoy the company of a refined gentleman to whom hospitality comes effortlessly. Give the slightest hint that you would prefer privacy and he will be sensitive to your wishes. Ask him for advice or help, and you will know what it means to have a knowledgeable friend in a foreign city. Treat him like the hired help and you will probaly get the treatment your crassness deserves. Reading a couple of negative reviews here, I can only conclude that the reviewers got on the wrong side of John, and suspect that may have had more to do with them than with him
As to the basics: The location is perfect, this is exactly where you want to be in BsAs. Best of all you get your own key to a discreet door in the trendiest street in the best part of town so you will feel like a local rather than just another tourist. As someone else has said, it is great to have a calm bolthole in the heart of San Telmo and above the bustle. The hospitality is second to none, not excluding your mother's - and a lot less intrusive. It's well-appointed and very clean. Breakfast is sociable, generous and laid back - so don't be shy to ask for what you want. The ever-smiling staff cover 6 days and somebody else (usually John) covers their day off. Pricing is not an issue compared with Europe - no doubt you can find cheaper places but I think you might regret it.
A big part of the appeal is the other guests. Many are regulars, almost all are interesting cosmopolitan and attractive. Friends of John's often drop in and join the conversation. I have met some really great people over the communal breakfast table, who have become either temporary playmates or permanent friends. If you are coming to BsAs on your own, I can think of no better way to find like-minded people with whom to see everything the city has to offer, or visit superb restaurants and hang out in bars, cafes and milongas.
Sadly I can't get back there for a third year running, but I have just booked a room for my son in November. It doesn't get much better than this. By all means spend five times as much sitting alone in your room in the Sheraton watching CNN; but that hardly seems worth leaving home for.
